News: Nokia and X-Prize Medical Sensor Competition - element14

Nokia_2012_final.png

?

Medical science advanced incredibly in the 20th century. Now Nokia and the X-Prize Foundation are pushing to make sure these great strides continue in the 21st century. Earlier this month, at the Wireless Health Convergence Summit in San Diego, Nokia and X-Prize Foundation executives announced that they will be holding a 2.25 million dollar competition to develop innovative medical sensing technology and devices.

?

?

The competition is fostering the technology that will deliver a dramatically better quality, accuracy and ease of constant monitoring of a person's health. Of course, this data must be obtained in real time and communicated wirelessly so patients and doctors can access it when needed.

?

?

The partnership involves Nokia because eventually these types of technologies could be put into handheld devices like cell phones. This would expand the market for these medical monitoring devices into areas of general public health and fitness. They stress this would help health care providers and consumers simultaneously.

?

?

Executives pointed out that improving on effectiveness, convenience and reducing the price of sensor devices could result in a reduction and better use of the 2 trillion dollar cost of the U.S. healthcare system.

?

?

Three competitions will be had in the next three years. Nokia and X-Prize hope that each winner will contribute to another competition called the Qualcomm Tricorder X Prize: a competition to develop the ultimate simple to use medical multi-sensor and processing device that could redefine the healthcare industry.

Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300

Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 ($180, list) is currently the only device that can take advantage of the higher speeds of 802.11ac. Of course, 802.11ac has yet to be ratified so the device is still in draft 802.11ac, which the device's packaging acknowledges. The media bridge is meant to be a companion device to the Buffalo AirStation AC1300/N900 Gigabit Dual Band WZR-D1800H Router, the company's first draft 802.11ac router.

A media bridge makes devices that are wired to it accessible wirelessly; typically you'd use it for hardware such as NAS devices, gaming consoles, and set-top boxes. While you can't wire your iPad or notebook to the media bridge and expect 1300 Mbps wireless performance if you also deploy Buffalo's 11ac router, the media bridge does offer a performance boost when used in conjunction with the D1800H. Performance gains are more noticeable when doing throughput-demanding tasks such as streaming high-definition video or copying large files across the network.

Although the biggest advantages of the device come when pairing it with the D1800H router, you can use it to connect to any AOSS or WPS enabled router. It's a well-made device for expanding wireless connectivity to wired devices, and if you are looking to leverage the performance boosts of Buffalo's 11ac router to the max right now, than the media bridge is a needed addition since there are no 11ac adapters currently available.

Specs and Setup
The D1300 is dual-band, supporting up to 1300 Mbps on the 5-GHz band and 450 Mbps on 2.4-GHz. The device is identical in design to the D1800H except the front panel has less LEDs. On the front is an AOSS button (AOSS is Buffalo's proprietary WPS "Wireless Protected Setup). When pushed, the media bridge syncs up with the D1800H and joins the wireless network.

The rear panel features four Gigabit Ethernet ports, a button to enable or disable 5-GHz, and a power on/off button.

The media bridge offers absolutely simple setup. There's no software or drivers to install. With the D1800H powered up and configured, I plugged in the media bridge and powered it on. To pair the router and bridge together is only a matter of pressing the AOSS button on the bridge and then the AOSS button on the D1800H. Pairing is complete when the wireless LED on both devices stop blinking. It's a solid setup process.

loading...

Performance
The media bridge does exactly what it's supposed to do; it allows wired devices to be accessed from a wireless network. I did want to see if I got any performance boost connecting a NAS to the bridge and wirelessly uploading a large file. I did. I connected Synology's DS712+ router to one of the LAN ports on the bridge and upload a 1.5GB file wirelessly. Connected to the bridge, my upload was about two minutes faster than with the NAS only connected to a router.

That may not sound like a lot, but the performance gain could make for better video streaming and gaming.

There's a management interface you can access via a browser on the device. It provides some network setting control, but there isn't a heck of a lot to manage with a bridge and most users will never have to access the interface.

A Bridge to 802.11ac
At the moment, the D1300 is the only way to take advantage of 802.11ac and that only in unison with Buffalo's D1800H 11ac router. On its own, it's an excellent media bridge and can work with non-Buffalo WPS?supported devices. With setup only requiring a push of a button, it's a four star earner for networking hardware. My single criticism is that unless you purchase the D1800H and want to get the gains of 11ac, the D1300 is pricey for a dual-band media bridge, when perfectly good non 802.11ac media bridges are available for $120 or less.?

WeDoRecover Expands Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centre Network with a New Partner Rehab Centre in Durban, South Africa That Will Focus on Upmarket South African and UK, English Patients

????JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, May 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- WeDoRecover was started in 2009 by an internationally accredited addiction counsellor who had run treatment centres in Johannesburg, South Africa and Manchester, England and recognised the need for families of patients to have an independent resource to use as a rehab directory that could guide them in the pre-admission crisis phase while making rehabilitaion centre choices.

Having performed over 100 successful addiction interventions and working with the best rehab centres in the UK, South Africa and Thailand the next logical step seemed to be offering addiction advice to friends and family of addicted people, helping patients to made educated choices about the best centre for them.

WeDoRecover provides a platform where family members who want to help their alcohol and drug addicted loved ones recover can call and get guidance from professional and qualified addiction counsellors.

WeDoRecover offers cost effective treatment centres and alcohol detoxification clinics bested suited to your circumstances and financial needs in all of South Africa's major cities (Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban) as well the UK (London, Manchester and other English towns) as well as Thailand rehab centres.

WeDoRecover's lead addictions counsellor, Gareth Carter says that it is vital that everyone has access to quality addiction treatment, regardless of where they are. "With South Africa having twice the world norm for alcohol and drug abuse, it's clear that our services are much needed."

"There are hundreds and thousands of people that need treatment and we would like to ensure that they are given the opportunity to recover from their respective addictions," said Carter.

The website, WeDoRecover.com, provides people with information regarding all types of drug and alcohol addictions and what can be done to treat it.

It also provides in depth articles and descriptions of the various available treatment centres and the processes involved in effective addiction rehabilitation.

Carter said that finding the correct rehabilitation centre is key in the path to a successful addiction recovery. "Because everyone is different, their addiction symptoms and treatment history, risk factors and funding available will differ, therefore picking the correct treatment centre can be tricky for the uninformed."

"There are a vast majority of treatments available to people struggling with drug and alcohol abuse and addiction, so that's where we step in and can provide fast, tangible solutions for the patient and their family."

Carter also added that they can provide answers to any questions people might have. "People want to know what makes this clinic good, what the success rates of each clinic is, how are the facilities like, can I afford it? WeDoRecover can answer all those questions and will ensure that you or your loved one receives the most helpful treatment available to your needs, your addiction, your budget, your age and other risk factors," said Carter.

The effects that alcohol and drug addiction have on society, especially in South Africa is far reaching. Addictions do not only affect the individual physically, but also the people around them.

"Alcohol and drug addiction can damage your career ambitions and most importantly, it affects the relationships you have with the people you love," said Carter.

Carter also said that many addiction treatment myths abound, that families and loved ones can also inadvertently enable their loved ones addiction by keeping it under wraps through being afraid of what the consequences might be if others found out. "If you know that your loved one has an addiction and do nothing but maintain the status quo, you are enabling their addiction. Your loved one has no reason to change their behaviour until you change yours. Drug and alcohol addicted patients rarely take responsibility for their recovery without external pressure forcing them to do so."

He also said that there are many ordinary citizens and several celebrities too that have made use of strong exchange rates to avail themselves of world class addiction treatment at more affordable prices than they find in their home countries (England, UK, Europe, America and the Middle East - Kuwait, Dubai UAE, Saudi Arabia) by accessing rehab centres in South Africa & Thailand.

"It certainly makes sense in this economy to travel abroad to a addiction rehabilitation centre that meets internationally accepted standards and pay less than you would at home. Of course the after-care plan and longer term recovery strategy is paramount to successful treatment."

New effective treatment for tinnitus?

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? A team of researchers from Maastricht, Leuven, Bristol and Cambridge demonstrated the effectiveness of a new tinnitus treatment approach in the journal The Lancet. Tinnitus is the perception of a noxious disabling internal sound without an external source. Roughly fifteen percent of the population suffers from this disorder in varying degrees along with the associated concentration problems, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression and extreme fatigue.

Sometimes this disorder is so disruptive it seriously impairs their daily functioning and, unfortunately, there is no cure.

The research conducted by Rilana Cima and her colleagues, however, indicates that cognitive behavioural therapy can help improve the daily functioning of tinnitus patients.

The study, conducted at Adelante Audiology & Communication, followed 492 adult tinnitus patients for a period of twelve months. The effectiveness of an innovative tinnitus treatment protocol was compared to the standard treatment methods offered throughout the Netherlands. The ground-breaking, stepped treatment plan consists of cognitive behavioural therapy and combines elements from psychology and audiology. The therapy aims at reducing the negative thoughts and feelings surrounding tinnitus, symptoms through exposure techniques, movement and relaxation exercises, and mindfulness-based elements.

This is supplemented with elements from the so-called tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), which examines the problems on a sound perception level. The treatment is offered by a multidisciplinary team of audiologists, psychologists, speech and movement therapists, physical therapists and social workers. The project was funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMW), and directed by Johan Vlaeyen, professor behavioural medicine at KU Leuven and Maastricht University.

The results offer compelling evidence to support the effectiveness of this innovative and specialised tinnitus therapy over more traditional forms of treatment. The overall health of the tinnitus patient improves and the severity of their symptoms and perceived impairment decreases after therapy. Moreover, the new treatment is far more effective in reducing negative mood, dysfunctional beliefs and tinnitus-related fear). The specialised tinnitus treatment is effective for both milder and more severe forms of the disorder. The researchers are therefore advocating a widespread implementation of this new treatment protocol.

(AP) ? A famed battleship that saw action during World War II and the Korean War and carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a wartime summit traveled along the California coast Sunday on its final voyage.

The iconic USS Iowa left San Francisco Bay on its way to its new home in Southern California.

Surrounded by pleasure boats and other vessels, the 887-foot long, 58,000-ton battlewagon was towed through the bay and passed under the Golden Gate Bridge at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Crowds watched from both sides of the bridge as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye provided an official escort and the San Francisco fireboat Phoenix led the way.

At the St. Francis Yacht Club on San Francisco's shoreline, officers and crew members of the USS Decatur, outfitted in their dress whites, saluted as the Iowa drifted past, Rogers said.

Club members also honored the Iowa with a farewell gun salute and a signal flag message ? "Farewell My Dear Friend."

"Everything has gone beautifully," said spokesman Bob Rogers of the Pacific Battleship Center, a nonprofit organization that will operate an interactive naval museum on board the USS Iowa at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. "The Phoenix was spraying water in every direction. She took her right out the Gate."

The Iowa, first commissioned in 1943 and again in 1951 and 1984, saw duty in World War II and the Korean War.

The ship once carried Roosevelt to a summit with Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin and Chiang Kai-shek. It also took part in escorting tankers in the Persian Gulf during the Iran-Iraq war before being decommissioned in 1990.

In recent years, the Iowa sat in the cold and fog, anchored with other mothballed ships in nearby Suisun Bay. Last year, the Pacific Battleship Center beat out the San Francisco Bay Area city of Vallejo when the U.S. Navy awarded the ship to the organization.

The center's future plans include an interactive tour experience that will allow the visitor to experience what life at sea was like during active duty. Among the highlights will be viewing the inside of one of the main gun turrets, seeing the 17.5-inch armored conning station on the bridge and viewing Roosevelt's stateroom.

The ship was recently moved to the Port of Richmond, not far from where "Rosie the Riveters" built ships in the 1940s. Workers scrubbed and painted the ship's exterior, replaced the teak deck and reattached the mast in preparation for the museum commissioning in July.

The Iowa was scheduled to leave on May 20 but was delayed because of a storm system. As it turned out, its departure came on the same day as weekend celebrations were under way marking the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th anniversary.

The trip down the coast is expected to take about four days.

Find What You Love: Stanford University Commencement address by Steve Jobs | Ze

?Your time is limited, so don?t waste it living someone else?s life?

Commencement address by Steve Jobs
CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios

Given to graduates of Stanford University, June 12, 2005 (Duration: 15 mins)

?I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

? you can?t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something ? your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life?

Your time is limited, so don?t waste it living someone else?s life.

Don?t be trapped by dogma ? which is living with the results of other people?s thinking. Don?t let the noise of others? opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.?

?We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.?? Randy Pausch

?What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn?t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

But the lecture he gave??Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams??wasn?t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because ?time is all you have?and you may find one day that you have less than you think?). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. St. John Fisher College Decides Against Adding a Law School

St. John Fisher College Decides Against Adding a Law School

Words I never thought I'd hear from a college president who has studied the option to add a law school to the academic program:

"I think it was more a matter of the decision that given the strategic plan of the college, our vision of what it should be, we had other priorities. I think that was the main thing."

That was from from Dr. Donald Bain, President of St. John Fischer College on the four year old plan to open a law school in downtown Rochester, NY. ?Further:

"We had thought about it at one point but we just found that other programs and projects that (sic) frankly we believe were more important to the college and also more important to our students?especially."

Amazing. ?A college president (and I assume a board of trustees) that read the studies and came to the conclusion that the school didn't need to invest in a law program. ?With Syracuse, Buffalo, and Ithica, home to established law schools and not terribly far away, the Rochester area is not necessarily underserved. ?There are fifteen law schools in New York State according to the New York State Unified Court System web site. ?More on this is available from the local ABC News affiliate in Rochester. ?[MG]

readinghenryjames.com ? Blog Archive ? No credit check car finance

There are many people who have their own vehicle but lots of people don?t have a car. They do not really have adequate credit to buy a brand new car consequently they will certainly require vehicle finance in order to to do so.

Car financing in the United kingdom is straightforward but it is not straightforward to obtain it with low-cost interest payments. When you search for vehicle finance in the British isles you should make an effort to get financing from the provider who can offer you you the cheapest loan rate. It is necessary to limit your load on your budget and repaying capacity.

In the United kingdom there are numerous loan providers which provide cheap vehicle finance for brand new and pre-owned cars. You should attempt to obtain several loan quotes from different lenders and compare all of them to make sure you get a very good understanding of cheap rate vehicle financing prior to committing yourself.

Persons that want to buy either a used automobile or a brand new vehicle but cannot pay the total price outright can apply for car finance loans. If you want to take advantage of this, you have got to thoroughly look into your own credit previous. Some vehicle finance providers refuse loan applications to people who possess a bad credit background. When you apply for a vehicle funding loan, the loan provider will look at your credit rating. If your score is above 600, there is a strong chance that your application will end up being authorized. If your rating is below 600, it might be wise to postpone your car purchase and improve your credit rating first.

Before you obtain a car or truck finance loan, you have to make certain that you are completely conscious of all the vehicle finance options offered. It is anticipated that your automobile dealership will also give you some sort of vehicle financing. Nevertheless, you can refuse their particular offer if you have secured a pre-approval from the automobile financing provider of your own choice. It is recommended that you shop around for vehicle funding loans first before you go to your local car dealership.

Getting a vehicle financing loan has advantages and drawbacks. This is the reason why you ought to take your time to search for reputable car finance with realistic rates of interest. You can browse online for vehicle financing providers so you can compare their reputations as well as their prices. You should never hurry into a automobile financing offer if you are not sure that you are transacting with a reliable provider. Bear in mind, purchasing a vehicle is a large purchase. You have to get hold of the best offer for you.

Before you go to get your loan, make sure you know about your own credit background. Obtain a copy of your credit review and go over it with a fine toothed comb. Look at the score as well as the payment records on it. If anything at all at all looks wrong, make sure you get it cleared up. When a lender looks at how much money to give you, they will check out your financial debt ratios, how long you have been in your job, your track record with comparable loans, and your credit report as a whole.

Debt Consolidation Help ? To Avoid Bankruptcy

Debt crisis or credit crunch, whatever it is, people want to get rid of tough economic climate and to get their finances in order. Paying high interest rate to credit card industries is not a good idea to get rid of financial crunches. It requires an expert help that can make one to solve their debt worries easily.

If we talk about the presence of credit card issuers, they are known to raise balance transfer fees. Some companies are raising the balance transfers to four or five percent of every amount transferred. It is very important to go through an ideal debt consolidation plan and for this you need to acquire assistance of professional mortgage brokers rather than going with any credit card issuer.

Minimum payments affordability
Suppose any company has increased their interest on credit cards to two or three or as much as five percent of the total balanced owed by the person.

And if one is carrying thousands of dollars as credit card debt, this can create problems for the person to pay the interest as its minimum payments can increase family monthly budget.

In this regard, getting debt help from debt consolidation firm can help one in negotiating an affordable consolidation plan and pay off all the debts faster. What the experts do? They go through the total debts of the client, check out the interest rates they pay to their creditors every month, analyze the current financial situation through mortgage calculator and then move further.

The mortgage firms make better use of their wide contacts with leading lenders in the market and offer the clients with the best possible lender to pay off all debts taken from several small creditors. About interest rates, they always choose the lender that asks for less interest rate known in the market.

Bankruptcy
Bankruptcy has various serious consequences, depending on varied legal structure and amendments in the constitution of any region. It not only ruins one?s credit scores but can also make one ineligible for better job options. Bankruptcy can impact person?s ability to get a car or job insurance and much more.

Threatened lawsuits, credit calls and other related hassles are looking after by debt consolidation experts. They manage to consolidate the amounts of any person on monthly basis, with low interest rates and that too without any risks of bankruptcy.

Hence, from the above discussions, it can be said that it is a must to hire a professional mortgage broker to get better debt consolidation results and other related services like renewal, refinance and much more.

Edwidge Danticat | Full Stop

Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat won widespread acclaim in 1994 with the release of her first novel,?Breath, Eyes, Memory, and?has since established herself in multiple genres ? publishing everything from short stories, novels, criticism, essays and a memoir ? though she prefers fiction because ?in fiction, you are God.? Her work has been nominated multiple times for a National Book Award and she was awarded a MacArthur Genius grant in 2009.

I sat down with Danticat in Oberlin, OH to discuss Create Dangerously ? a collection of nonfiction essays and her latest published work ? as well as her thoughts on language, distance, immigration, and the roles of writers.

Liv Combe: My favorite story from Create Dangerously was your essay ?The Other Side of the Water.? At one moment, your aunt asks you not to write about the death of your cousin from AIDS. ?They say that everything they say to you ends up written down somewhere,? she says. You respond that you wish you could apologize, but that ?this immigrant artist, like many other artists, is a leech and I needed to latch on.?

As a writer, you call yourself at different times a liar, a parasite, a leech, yet you also say that your role is to expose people to the beauty and the love in Haiti that people don?t usually see in the news. Which role as a writer do you feel you are most often filling?

Edwidge Danticat: Probably all of the above. In a way, writers are like sponges. We?re always trolling for stories, whether we realize it or not. And it only gets difficult when the people around us catch on! They?re like, ?Oh, you?re writing a story, aren?t you?? And most of the time they?re wrong about the kind of story they think you?re writing.

But I feel like I?ve probably been all these things at different times. There are moments where you?re having an experience while at the same time, you?re outside of it, thinking what it would be like to write it. Maybe during those times you are more fully immersed, or maybe you?re not; you?re always this insider/outsider, because you?re sort of organizing things through narrative. And that doesn?t prevent you from having the full experience of surrendering to emotion, but you?re participating in things in two different ways. In this case, I?m still the cousin and this is still my aunt, but at the same time I?m seeing the story structure, the possibility of that. One of the things about writing is that your role keeps evolving all the time, and what you?re looking at [are] different things, [you?re looking at] different situations with different eyes.

What you said about the writer being an insider/outsider sounds a lot like how you talk about being an immigrant ? being stuck somewhere in between two countries. Do you think if you weren?t an immigrant, if you hadn?t moved to the United States, your writing would be entirely different? Would you see yourself as a writer in a different way?

You know, I?m a big reader, so I?ve been able to read people who have never left their homes, and I?ve been able to read people who have wandered in different parts of the world. I think there are advantages to both. I think being close to the ground, observing a situation closely in the every day allows you a certain perspective, but also being in between, you know, it?s what Julia Alvarez calls ?writing on the hyphen.? And I?ve always thought, for me, because I?ve benefitted from it so much ? being able to read people who write from this particular place, this in-between place ??I think people like that deserve their own literature. I think that?s an interesting place to write.

You only know what you know, so I don?t know what it would have been like ? but if I?d never left Haiti, it would have been a whole different experience. I would have been writing differently.

Yeah, I guess that question was kind of grossly hypothetical, wasn?t it??

I would be writing in a different language, for one thing! It wouldn?t have been in English.

You did?an interview with the?Fiction Writers Review?about a year ago?where you said, ?I sometimes think I am doing simultaneous interpretation while writing: the characters are speaking Creole, and I am interpreting for them.? I was wondering how your knowledge of language affects your writing, or the way you think about characters and dialogue. If you feel like you?re interpreting, does that change the way you write or think?

It?s interesting, because it?s just become the method. It?s just how it works. You know? It?s like, okay, this is how we function. It?s simultaneous to the point where I?m not even thinking about it. Like, I know that the people are not speaking the language, they?re not . . . it?s like watching these movies. You have two choices. You?re watching the miniseries about the French Revolution. . . it?s on American television; sometimes they have a Napoleon with an accent. And sometimes, which I think is a better choice, it?s just regular English. Because you know it?s Napoleon, you know it?s an interpretation. So I think that?s how it is to me in terms of the most primal translation. It just happens at the same time that you?re writing.

For me, the wonderful thing about this situation ? and I guess that?s what?s great about American writing in my particular period of time ? is that I?m not the only one doing it. There?s Junot D?az, there?s Sandra Cisneros, there [are] all these people from other places who are immigrants or children of immigrants who are doing this in their own way. So, for me ? talk about feeling less alone as a reader, but also feeling less alone as a writer in that, okay, I belong to this sort of stew, and we?re all doing that. Some of us are rebelling against italics! And it?s just part of the mix. It is what it is. And, I mean, sometimes when the writing is going good, you?re so transported in your own world and in your own writing that it just flows from that place.

Because I think we?re translating anyway. You know, whether [or not] you?re writing from the same language, you?re selectively plucking out moments in a character?s life that?s leading to some kind of epiphany or conclusion. You?re certainly not reporting everything they do in the day; it?s still like we?re selecting when we write fiction. Or even when we write nonfiction; when you start a nonfiction piece about someone picking their nose, you?re trying to say something about that person! You know what I mean? Everything is sort of leading in a certain way. I think it?s just a different kind of selection.

Maybe it?s because [of] the way I live between languages, but I see language as a tool. Like any other thing in writing, it?s not necessarily a choice for me, I feel like it?s just one of the other things that happened. And something wonderful happens, too, when these language meet. Because when you come from another language, English is so new, in a way. And [because of] all the possibilities of it, and things you can bend, and things that you might be too shy to do in your own language. It?s very exciting.

In that same interview, you said that you first wrote creatively in English ? it just sort of happened that way and you continued with it. And you said, ?Maybe English also offers a veil, some kind of distance that makes me bolder.? And in?another interview in 2003 with? The Progressive, you said that the ?idea of just putting on a mask . . . was always something that was interesting to me because sometimes when we?re most shielded is when we?re boldest.? How does this idea of shielding yourself play into your concept of creating dangerously?

You know, that whole notion of creating dangerously I borrowed from Albert Camus, who in 1957 was saying, ?To create today is to create dangerously.? And one of the things that he says also is that the writer is like everybody else: you?re on the galley, and you?re sort of rowing your oar against a tide and you?re trying to stay alive. I think you can take that from the most extreme, when people are writing on prison walls, to the most mundane, where people are just [too] shy to write, [who have] no other dangers than being ridiculed.

When I started writing I used to think that whatever it takes to get you past that hump, past those fears in that moment and situation where you?re able to [begin writing] but some inner thing is preventing you, I feel like whatever it takes, [do it, even] if it means hiding out somewhere. And [writing] requires that, it requires so much time alone, it requires, you know, so much hiding to expose yourself. And that?s the thing about writing fiction: with fiction, you can lie. That?s why I call myself a liar, a liar in terms of the fiction world. In fiction you can lie to tell these other truths and tales to reveal other things. So [we must do] whatever it takes, in a way, to get us there.

You?ve written memoirs, essays, novels, short stories, articles. When you start formulating a story in your head, do you see it as a certain one of those, or is there a default sort of genre that you like to write in? Or maybe ?genre? isn?t the right world ? maybe something like ?form??

No, ?genre? is good. I mean, what I like most about the whole thing is the variety, the ability to have variety. I love writing fiction, probably more than other things because you have a kind of liberty with the material that you don?t have with nonfiction. I love being able to invent things. I love this ability to just invent, you know? So I love writing fiction: I love writing short fiction, I love writing long fiction.

But what I like most is not being told that, Oh, you just have to write this, you can only write that. I like being able to jump between genres, to do different things, because for me it keeps it all so exciting, and I feel like if I?m not doing this, I can be doing that.

In?a 2007 interview with NPR?you were called a ?literary ambassador? for Haiti. How do you feel about that title, and also the responsibility that comes along with it? The implication is that you?re speaking for an entire country.

I feel like ? because I?ve always lived near or in a Haitian community; in Haiti, obviously, when I was much younger, and then in the United States ??I know a lot of [Haitian] people. I know the whole range of the experience. I know that it?s not monolithic. So I?ve always seen myself as one of many people who can carry that title. (Remarkably, there [are] a lot of people who don?t know [that] Haiti [has] a huge amount of literature ? a little bit of it is in translation, but more could be.) So I never really saw myself as unique in this situation, because I know a lot of other people like me, who were writing like me. So I would say I?m one of many people like that.

I don?t think it?s useful or even accurate to say that one person can be a literary ambassador to any culture, because ultimately writers are writing from a singular point of view, and maybe others identify, and maybe others within your culture can be contrary. They can have totally opposite experiences. Sometimes ? and I see it in a lot of my friends from different cultures who are writing here now ? the harshest critics are people who are from the culture, people who know more, who know all the nuances. And in a way I think that?s very fair, because their expectations are a lot higher.

So, for me, knowing all that and living all that, I know that it?s impossible for one person to be the voice of any culture, especially a very layered and complicated one like Haitian culture.

Do you consider your writing political at all? You write about issues that are very political ? issues of immigration, AIDS, terrorism, natural disasters, corrupt governments.?

Well, saying it?s not political would also be political, in a way. Yeah, I consider it political. I mean, I don?t consider it like a tract ? except when I do write tracts, like op-eds and things like that! But I consider it political.

What I?m also interested in, especially in the fiction that I write, is creating vivid characters, engaging human beings. Because sometimes people say, ?Oh, it?s political, but it seems like you?re writing types,? [and] not just types, but stereotypes. I?m interested in writing about ordinary people in difficult situations: some of them romantic, some of them familial, some of them political.

Distance, whether it is death or immigration, is a theme that runs throughout a lot of your writing. In Create Dangerously you often mention the Creole phrase l?t b? dlo, which means, ?on the other side of the water,? and can refer to death or physical distance. Does distance scare you at all, or is it something that?s more comforting or liberating than it is frightening?

It?s both. You know, because I think that part of the distance is also longing ? longing for the physical landscape sometimes, longing for family members who are there, longing for some of the daily things you are missing in the lives of people you care about. And having this desire sometimes for your presence to be more ordinary, which I was more able to do when I was younger, to just kind of be there, just be hanging out. Visits tend to now be sort of purposeful, even the relaxing ones; they tend to be more purposeful because I?m like, ?Oh, I want my girls to see this, or see that,? you know. There?s also that kind of longing that comes with hyper-alertness ? ?I have to see this, I have to see all of that? ? especially in a place like Haiti that?s always changing.

[The distance isn?t always] comforting. There?s anxiety in it too. [Haiti] is identified for me by the people. Because what removes you from a place is just no longer having these personal connections, do you know what I mean? When my uncle died, for example, I lost a neighborhood, in a way. I lost a place to go back to. So I think that what keeps you bound, what keeps you connected, are these personal connections that are less easy to generalize in terms of the place. The place is created from ties with people you know, people you love. So at times parts of [the distance] are liberating, but the times with it are sort of [filled with] anxiety, filled with longing. One way that I fulfill part of that longing is visiting a place in my work ? sort of recreating my version of it in my writing. Because in the writing you can combine different places, you can combine different people and create your own kind of land, or versions of that land.

NFL making thigh and knee pads mandatory in '13

ATLANTA (AP) ? The NFL's move to make thigh and knee pads mandatory equipment for the 2013 season already has drawn criticism from the guys who will have to wear them.

Not long after Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay, chairman of the competition committee, said at an owners meeting Tuesday that the league can apply the decision unilaterally, the players union and several members expressed their dissatisfaction.

First, the NFL Players Association argued that the move should be negotiated.

"Any change in working conditions is a collectively bargained issue," the union said in a statement. "While the NFL is focused on one element of health and safety today, the NFLPA believes that health and safety requires a comprehensive approach and commitment. We are engaged in and monitor many different issues, such as players' access to medical records, prescription usage and the situation with professional football's first responders, NFL referees.

"We always look forward to meeting with the NFL to discuss any and all matters related to player health and safety."

Then the players spoke up.

"I hate that," Raiders linebacker Travis Goethel said. "I don't want that at all. I don't like having anything restricting my movement in my legs. If you get hit in the thigh, it really doesn't do too much to help you out."

Added Broncos cornerback Drayton Florence:

"My opinion is that I don't want to wear them, but you have to follow the rules and policies. I just think that's a way for them to kind of cover themselves with things that have been going on in the past" such as concussions suffered in collisions with knees or thighs.

Commissioner Roger Goodell can't see any downside to extra protection. He noted that the NFL and union have been discussing hip, knee and thigh pads for three years.

"I believe the technology has improved, the pads are far better than a decade ago, they allow better performance and are more protective. Every other level of football uses the pads."

Goodell pointed out something a Nike executive told him recently: NBA players are wearing more pads from the hips down than NFL players.

"There is something wrong with that," Goodell said.

Should a player not have the pads on when he enters a game in 2013, he will be sent off the field by a game official.

"It's the same as if he ran on without a helmet," McKay said. "It is a safety rule."

The pads rule would not go into effect on the field until next year so equipment manufacturers can work on safety and comfort.

Goodell said he expects evidence in the Saints bounties case would be made public after all the player appeals and grievances have been heard. Release of any documents also could be delayed by Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma's defamation lawsuit against Goodell after the commissioner suspended Vilma for the entire 2012 season.

Goodell said he has "not spent a lot of time" on the lawsuit in which Vilma contends the commissioner made false statements that tarnished Vilma's reputation and hindered his ability to earn a living playing football.

"I've been around this league for 30 years and you are going to make decisions that will not be unanimous, it just doesn't happen, particularly in a game where there is a lot of emotion, a lot of passion," Goodell said. "What I have to do is what is in best interests of the game long term.

"You watch Pete Rozelle and Paul Tagliabue, you are part of the decision-making process, and you see how they go about it. You watch other leagues, try to take in every perspective.

"You don't worry about a popularity contest. You can't."

The owners also voted to move the trading deadline from after Week 6 to after Week 8, and to allow one "marquee" player placed on injured reserve to return to practice after the sixth week of the schedule and to the lineup after the eighth week. That player must be on the 53-man roster after the final preseason cut.

Terrell Suggs, the 2011 Defensive Player of the Year, could fall into that category. Suggs recently underwent surgery for a torn Achilles tendon. If the Ravens believe Suggs can make it back by midseason, as the linebacker has predicted, they could use the IR special designation for him.

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft likes the adjustment because he knows firsthand how devastating an injury to a star player can be.

"It's good because I think it keeps the excitement in the game," Kraft said. "I know when we lost Tom Brady there was a feeling he could have come back at the end of the year. It would have been great for the fans, and I think every team has someone in that category."

Goodell said the league is closer to a decision on what to do with the Pro Bowl, which he called "not a competitive game" in January. He wants more discussions with the players about how to improve the quality of the game, but dropping it entirely still is possible.

"The issue is we recognize it is an all-star game, but we also believe fans expect more from an NFL game," he said. "If we believe we can achieve that, we want to give them every opportunity to do that."

Only New Orleans, site of next year's Super Bowl, and Honolulu are being considered if the Pro Bowl is held.

The league approved the Buffalo Bills playing one regular-season game every year from 2013-17 in Toronto, extending that international series. Expansion of the international series in London could come as early as next year, Goodell added.

While Cowboys and Redskins executives were in the owners meetings they learned that their grievance against the NFL and the NFLPA over reductions in their salary caps was dismissed. Dallas loses $10 million over this season and next and Washington loses $36 million.

Washington general manager Bruce Allen said the team is "obviously disappointed." Asked how losing another $18 million might inhibit the Redskins, he said: "We'll see. We'll have time to talk about it."
