HOUSTON (AP) ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry has spent much of the past three years loudly and defiantly fighting against what he views as Washington meddling in state affairs, often refusing to cooperate with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and becoming a leader in the battle against President Barack Obama's health care plan.

Other Republican governors pursuing a similar tactic may want to take note of what's happened in Texas amid Perry's hard-fought battle: An obstinate refusal to cooperate has resulted in more, not less, federal oversight.

"We're very conservative and we're very stubborn," said Bill Miller, a lobbyist in Austin for HillCo who has represented both Republicans and Democrats. He described the Texas mindset this way: "We're not going to be smart. We're going to be pure. It's a point of pride and if there's something else we're proud of, it's our pride."

One area where Texas has fought ferociously with the feds has been on environmental regulations. Yet as the state challenged EPA rules in court over the past three years, the federal agency simply side-stepped the state to work directly with industry.

A similar scenario is playing out with Obama's health care overhaul in Texas, where nearly a quarter of the population, or 6.2 million people, are uninsured. Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has given the law the green light, it's highly likely that Texas won't have time to build a key program, forcing the federal government to design and manage it until the Lone Star State steps up.

"When Texas maintains programs ... they're able to allow Texas values to predominate," said Cal Jillson, a political scientist with Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

And when the federal government steps in, it actually strengthens the anti-Washington sentiment in Texas.

"Typically, federal involvement in Texas drives the argument that it's no damn good for Texas," Miller said.

Richard Hyde, deputy executive director of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, has been dealing with such issues for several years. First, the EPA overturned a long-standing air-permitting program, forcing more than 120 plants to get new operating papers. As Texas pursued court challenges, the EPA offered the companies options for getting new permits so the nation's largest refineries could operate, and sent them back to the state to finalize the paperwork.

Then, when Texas refused to participate in a new requirement that companies that emit greenhouse gases get special permits, saying it does not have the authority to issue such paperwork, the EPA began directly administering the program, Hyde said. The agencies do communicate "about process" because the EPA is not usually in the business of issuing permits, he said, but the situation is not ideal.

"With greenhouse gas permitting and flexible permits, certainly they felt like we should fit in a box just like all the other 50 states. And if you want to ... think out of the box and it doesn't fit in the mold, it doesn't work for them," Hyde said. "We want to show that the Texas way works for Texas."

When it comes to Obama's health care plan, Texas has focused on challenging the law in court. That means it's unlikely to have a health insurance marketplace up and running by 2014. The insurance exchange is designed to allow individuals and small businesses to shop for coverage from a range of competing insurers.

As a result, Texas and other GOP-led states that counted on the law being overturned could see Washington running their exchanges instead.

Mark Jones, the head of the political science department at Rice University in Houston, points out that when the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality oversees a permitting program, it considers industry needs and the economy first, while the EPA emphasizes the environment ? two conflicting philosophies. With the health care exchange, Jones believes that because the government acts as a clearinghouse, federal involvement will not have as much impact.

Still, he said, if Washington puts together Texas' exchange it will almost certainly be "more progressive and liberal."

Faced with that possibility, some Republican governors hedged their bets. In Michigan, for example, Republican Gov. Rick Snyder indicated before Thursday's ruling that he would consider moving forward with his state's exchange so it could control its design. He said he was "just trying to be a pragmatist."

In a statement Friday, Perry's office said it was evaluating the court's ruling and determining the best course of action. But it added that Texas "has no interest in accelerating the implementation of Obama-care in Texas and will continue to call for the full repeal of this bankrupting and overreaching bill."

"Gov. Perry's top priority is defending the best interests of Texans, not blindly folding to the will of an overreaching, misguided federal government that has no regard for the 10th Amendment and seeks to impose one size fits all mandates that lead our entire nation down a path to mediocrity," the statement said. "Texans have had enough of this administration's bully tactics."

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is already running a federally mandated insurance plan that has about 5,700 Texans with pre-existing conditions participating, a transitional program that will be available until the exchange is in place. Other states have asked to run this program themselves.

Arlene Wohlgemuth, executive director of Texas Public Policy Foundation, a conservative think tank in Austin that includes health care as a focus, said there doesn't appear to be much of an advantage to Texas running its own exchange program because the law doesn't give states much room to tailor the programs.

"There was so precious little flexibility allowed that it really doesn't matter," she said. "We never saw any advantage in having a state do their own health care exchange."

All the world's quakes since 1898 mapped

If you've ever wondered where ? and why ? earthquakes happen the most, look no further than a new map, which plots more than a century's worth of nearly every recorded earthquake strong enough to at least rattle the bookshelves.

The map shows earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater since 1898; each is marked in a lightning-bug hue that glows brighter with increasing magnitude.

The overall effect is both beautiful and arresting, revealing the silhouettes of Earth's tectonic boundaries in stark, luminous swarms of color.

The map's maker, John Nelson, the user experience and mapping manager for IDV Solutions, a data visualization company, said the project offered several surprises.

"First, I was surprised by the sheer amount of earthquakes that have been recorded," Nelson told OurAmazingPlanet. "It's almost like you could walk from Seattle to Wellington (New Zealand) if these things were floating in the ocean, and I wouldn't have expected that."

In all, 203,186 earthquakes are marked on the map, which is current through 2003. And it reveals the story of plate tectonics itself.

Earthquake makers
The long volcanic seams where Earth's crust is born appear as faint, snaking lines cutting through the world's oceans. The earthquakes along these so-called spreading centers tend to be rather mild. The best studied spreading center, called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, bisects the Atlantic Ocean, on the right side of the image.

Its Pacific counterpart wanders along the eastern edge of the Pacific Ocean, cutting a wide swath offshore of South America. Another spreading center makes a jog though the Indian Ocean and up through the Red Sea.

Subduction zones, the places where tectonic plates overlap and one is forced to dive deep beneath the other and into the Earth's crushing interior ? a process that generates the biggest earthquakes on the planet ? stand out like a Vegas light show.

Nelson said this concept hit home particularly for the Ring of Fire, the vast line of subduction zones around the northern and western edge of the Pacific Ocean.

"I have a general sense of where it is, and a notion of plate tectonics, but when I first pulled the data in and started painting it in geographically, it was magnificent," Nelson said. "I was awestruck at how rigid those bands of earthquake activity really are."

That realization prompted one big decision about the map's design, Nelson said. Unlike many maps made in the United States, this one is centered over the Pacific Ocean. "That looked like where the magic was happening," Nelson said. California, a spot rattled by quakes where faults jolt horizontally, also shines brightly.

There are undoubtedly many earthquakes missing, given the dramatic change in scope and accuracy of seismological instruments from 1898 to the present day. Nelson said he saw a huge jump in the volume of data from the 1960s forward. Yet even without the complete catalog of earthquakes, the map provides a striking visual reference ? even though none of the data are new.

All the earthquake information and maps are freely available on the Internet courtesy of the U.S. Geological Survey, university and state partners in California, and NASA.

"There's nothing new about plotting earthquakes," Nelson said. "It's just presenting it in an interesting way."

And although he was modest about his own role as a designer, Nelson emphasized the value of design in making data more engaging. The project was a follow-up to a recent map of more than 50 years of tornado tracks across the United States; he said both maps are designed to get people more interested in the larger phenomena behind them. "To get them to start asking questions," Nelson said.

In short, a colorful map will grab people more than an Excel spreadsheet, even when both contain the same information.

"It seems almost superficial, but it's true," Nelson said. "If something is treated with thoughtful design, then it becomes better."

Research In Motion Thursday delayed the make-or-break launch of its next-generation BlackBerry phones until next year, in a devastating setback to the once-dominant technology company whose sales are crumbling.

Shares in the company, which also announced a steeper-than-expected quarterly operating loss, plunged 18 percent after it said it would release its revamped BlackBerry 10 devices early in 2013, instead of late this year, because the development had "proven to be more time consuming than anticipated."

The delay in releasing the devices???RIM's last best hope of stemming its eclipse at the hands of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android phones ? confirmed the worst fears of analysts and investors.

Combined with the size of the loss, its first for eight years, and the likelihood that sales keep sliding into 2013, it narrows the window through which RIM must climb if it is to survive as an independent entity.

RIM's announcement that it would slash 5,000 jobs, or 30 percent of its workforce, only reinforced the impression of a company that could be in terminal decline.

"It's like watching a puppy die. It's terrible," said Matthew Thornton, an analyst at Avian Securities in Boston.

"Wow, what a disaster," said Edward Snyder, managing director of Charter Equity Research in San Francisco, who said RIM was now in "a handset death spiral."

"From a numbers point of view it could hardly be worse and it's going to deteriorate from here," he said.

RIM, which virtually invented mobile email, has fallen from a leadership position to an also-ran in smartphones over a few short years filled with delayed and uninspiring products, service outages and other embarrassments.

Now its new BlackBerry line will miss both the back-to-school and Christmas shopping periods, while the competition brings out new phones with more bells and whistles.

Apple is widely expected to unveil an iPhone 5 later this year, while a slew of manufacturers using Google's Android software are constantly pushing out new gadgets. Microsoft's alliance with Nokia is also gaining traction.?(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

"There's really no guarantee that once they come out on the other side of BlackBerry 10 that it's going to be something that people will want," said Eric Jackson, a hedge fund manager at Ironfire Capital in Toronto.

The job cuts will likely cost RIM $350 million in the current fiscal year. RIM has pledged to slash $1 billion from its operating costs in the year.

RIM now considers that $1 billion target as a minimum it will pursue given the additional BlackBerry 10 delay. It said it has already cut layers of management, streamlined its supply chain and outsourced repair work.

RIM said it expects to post another operating loss in the current quarter, as it ships fewer smartphones.

The company said it shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones in the last quarter, only about half of the more than 14 million it shipped two quarters ago. Until now, it had shipped more than 10 million devices every quarter since late in 2009.

GOP hostility blocked Kan. work on health overhaul

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Kansas officials have made little progress toward enacting a key part of the federal health care overhaul, and Gov. Sam Brownback and fellow Republican critics of the law are instead hoping that the U.S. Supreme Court will strike it down, saving them the trouble.

If the nation's highest court does that in its ruling, which is expected Thursday, many Kansas officials are likely to celebrate. But if the justices uphold even part of the law, the state could find itself with a new health insurance exchange over which it has little control.

Republican hostility against the 2010 law championed by President Barack Obama prevented the state from establishing its own exchange, which would help consumers find health insurance starting in 2014. Last year, Brownback returned a $31.5 million federal grant to assist the state with the computer infrastructure for an exchange.

If the requirement for exchanges stands, states face a Nov. 16 deadline to submit plans to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The choices for Kansas would be seeking a partnership with the federal government or having the federal government run the exchange, said Linda Sheppard, the Insurance Department's project manager for the health overhaul.

"I do not believe we'd be able to do a state-level exchange," said Sheppard, also director of the department's accident and health division.

Some industry officials worry about having a federally run exchange for Kansas, fearing its rules could be too burdensome and that some requirements could cut independent agents out of the exchange completely. Kerri Spielman, executive director of the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents, still holds out hope that legislators could work on an exchange next year.

"There are just too many people ready to move and act," she said. "We don't need to reinvent the wheel. We just need to have something that fits Kansas."

Republican legislators defend their lack of action, saying it made no sense to work on an exchange with so much uncertainty surrounding the federal law. And Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer, a surgeon and former state senator, said Kansas should "determine the state's needs and priorities and then enact our own reforms," without being more specific.

But House Insurance Committee Chairman Clark Shultz, a Lindsborg Republican acknowledged that if all or part of the federal law stands, "we're definitely running into a time deadline here ? a crunch."

Kansas has about 350,000 residents who don't have health insurance coverage, or 12.7 percent of the state's population, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. About 53,000 are children.

Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, a Republican, had planned to work on an exchange, but the Kansas GOP made the 2010 elections largely a referendum on Obama and tapped into the tea party movement's frustrations. Republicans swept all statewide and congressional offices for the first time since 1964 and added to their legislative majorities, and many new lawmakers are conservatives.

"They think they are going to be vindicated," said state Democratic Chairwoman Joan Wagnon, a former Kansas House member. "They've put all of their eggs in that basket."

Brownback was a U.S. senator and an ardent opponent of the health care overhaul before he became governor in January 2011.

Last year, Brownback not only returned the federal grant but also signed a "health care freedom" bill into law. The law says Kansas residents have the right to refuse to buy health insurance, adding that they can't be fined or forced to pay other penalties for refusing.

The law takes aim a provision in the federal health care overhaul requiring most Americans to purchase health insurance, starting in 2014, and imposing tax penalties if they don't. Even some GOP legislators doubted the state law could block the mandate in Kansas, but supporters saw it at least as a powerful statement.

Brownback's administration also has criticized a provision of the federal health care overhaul that expands the Medicaid program, so that states cover childless adults. Republicans are skeptical that the federal government will keep its promises to finance the expansion, and state officials estimate it would add as many as 130,000 people to the state's Medicaid program.

News Corp board approves company split: source

(Reuters) - The board of News Corp approved in principle splitting the $60 billion media conglomerate into separate publishing and entertainment businesses, a person familiar with the situation said on Thursday.

News Corp's board, overseen by 81-year-old chairman Rupert Murdoch, met on Wednesday and an announcement was expected later on Thursday on the decision to create two publicly traded companies, the source said, confirming a report in the Wall Street Journal.

Ever unpredictable, Murdoch, after years of resisting calls by some large shareholders to spin out or sell off the company's slow-growth - and in some cases, loss-making - newspapers, decided to propose the move rather suddenly.

Details on the management structure are still to be resolved and formal approval by the board is still needed. The process is expected to take about a year, said the source, who did not want to be named as the decision had still to be made public.

Pressure on News Corp to get rid of the newspaper business was ramped up after a phone hacking scandal tainted its British titles and forced the company to drop its proposed acquisition of pay-TV group BSkyB.

"As recently as a month ago he (Murdoch) was still saying no way would he do this," said one News Corp insider with knowledge of the internal conversations.

The Wall Street Journal, owned by News Corp, earlier said one company will hold the entertainment businesses like 20th Century Fox, Fox broadcast network and Fox News Channel, while the other will hold the publishing assets, which include The Times, The Australian, and HarperCollins book publishing.

In a brief statement on Tuesday, News Corp said only that it was "considering" splitting the company. According to people familiar with the matter, News Corp has already enlisted investment banks JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and Centerview to advise on a process.

Wednesday's board meeting lasted about an hour and a half and many details, such as who will run the publishing business, have yet to be resolved, the Wall Street Journal said.

News Corp spokesmen in New York and Sydney were not immediately available to comment on whether the split had been approved.

The board, long criticized for being dominated by the Murdochs or beholden to them, had been expected to approve the split. It was not immediately clear if it will be put to a shareholder vote. If it is, Murdoch controls just under 40 percent of the vote and would likely have no problem getting the extra 10 percent needed.

The process of separating the company's broadcast, cable and film assets from its publishing and education operations stands to be complicated by issues such as regulatory and tax implications and could take up to a year to complete.

The film and television businesses generated revenues of $23.5 billion in the year to June 2011, dwarfing the publishing unit's $8.8 billion. Publishing, including integrated marketing services, accounts for around 7 percent of News Corp's enterprise value, according to analysts at Barclays Capital. It estimates that publishing represents 24 percent of revenues and around 11 percent of operating income.

Analysts estimate an independent publishing division would generate about $1.3 billion in EBITDA at a multiple valuation of 6 times, or $3.25 per share. They expect a standalone entertainment unit to be valued at $52 billion, or $23 per share, based on an 8 times cash flow multiple.

JOCKEYING FOR TOP JOBS

The most speculation revolves around how Murdoch handles the reassigning of his top executives, including his three adult children associated with the company.

With a split between the struggling publishing business and its much larger, faster-growing entertainment business, the majority of the big names are anticipated to jockey for key roles on the entertainment side.

Chase Carey, News Corp's current No. 2, is widely seen as the likely CEO designate for the entertainment business. Liz Murdoch and James Murdoch are expected to report to him. That could raise questions about the current heads of the Fox TV business, Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly.

Less clear is who would run the publishing business. One obvious candidate is Joel Klein, the former New York City chancellor for education, who joined News Corp last year to run its new education business, which so far consists only of Wireless Generation, a digital company for schools. Murdoch's eldest son, Lachlan, a former New York Post publisher and currently a director, is another prospect.

Canaccord Genuity Inc analyst Thomas Eagan believes News Corp stock has room to rise even with an 11 percent gain since news of the split plans broke on Tuesday. "News Corp is still trading below its peers at 6.5 times EBITDA, even after you take out the publishing business and the expected litigation costs," he said.

News Corp's Australian-listed shares jumped more than 3.5 percent to a 4-year high of A$22.29 on Thursday.

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

MT PLEASANT ? The Frederick Christian (F.C.) Jensen home is one of Mt. Pleasant?s standouts. What makes it more remarkable is that Jensen built it not for his own family but for his mother, Maria.

Jensen, a prominent Danish settler, Sanpete County businessman and Presbyterian, built the majestic two-story home on the corner of 200 West and 200 South in 1891.

It was added to the National Historic Register in 1982.

The hose is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture with its Eastlake porches and Carpenter Gothic? gables, according to the building?s registry with the U.S. Department of the Interior Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service.

The superior architecture reflects Jensen?s craftsmanship. Among his many business ventures, Jensen owned what was considered one of the finest furniture stores in the region.

The exterior of the home features four main gables decorated with alternating bands of diagonal and fishscale shingles. The two main porches have flat roofs with columns decorated with scroll brackets at the top of each column and fancy balusters.

The north parlor, one of two in the home, featured a half-octagonal bay window.

Painted bright colors

In the Danish tradition, the porch columns and balusters were originally painted in bright colors, according to the registry.

The woodwork throughout the home and the ceilings in both parlors were once intricately painted by a Danish artist, recalls Winifred Steadman Colwill, F.C. Jensen?s granddaughter. The home also features a very large kitchen and dining room in the back of the home, as well as a very large back porch.

?They entertained a lot of visitors,? Colwill says.

Upstairs were three bedrooms and one very large bathroom, which was the only original bathroom in the home. The home was filled with Danish furniture including tall, hand-painted bureaus.

Colwill visited the home frequently during her childhood and lived there with her grandmother as a high school student and in the summers during her college years.

One parlor was used as a music room, and it housed a beautiful grand piano. The room also features an Italian tile fireplace, which is still there today.

Sadly, one of the painted ceilings was destroyed when a pipe burst in the music room during a very cold winter. During the 1940s and 1950s, the family closed up the home during the winter because it had no central heating, and they would live at another residence in California. The water damage had become substantial before the family discovered it later in the spring. The ceiling had to be completely replaced. Gratefully, the grand piano was preserved by a plastic cover, Colwill recalls.

The family sold the home to Wasatch Academy in 1954 for a very modest price, says Donna Glidewell, the school?s historian, who also lives in the home for a period in 1991. The home is used today as a private residence by a member of the school?s faculty.

Pioneer Roots

F.C. Jensen and his twin Peter James were born in 1858, They were named after the King and Prince of Denmark. In all, Maria had five children. Their family ran an inn in Odense, Denmark, until F.C.?s father passed away. He and his brother were the youngest in the family and were grade-school age when Maria converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family immigrated to Utah in 1862.

?They throught they were coming to live a better life,? Glidewell says. However, Maria broke her hip during the wagon ride and never fully recovered. She became dependent on her children to take care of her.

In addition, Maria spent the family?s entire life savings to pay for their travel and those of 19 other early Danish saints. She was promised by church leaders in Denmark that she would be reimbursed for the travel costs of the additional saints when they arrived in Utah.

Colwill says that when Maria Jensen arrived, authorities told her they considered the money she spent ?a gift? to the saints. But Maria and her family fell away from the LDS Church for another reason, says Glidewell, who has read the family?s history book.

?It?s probably the fault of the bishop at the time,? she says. ?No one liked him.?

The bishop quarantined F.C. and his brother for having smallpox one winter. It was normal procedure for them to hang a white flag outside their home as a warning of sickness to others. However, the bishop extended the quarantine through the spring, even though the boys were well again.

Against her bishop?s orders, Maria directed her sons to pursue the spring planting, while posting a white flag nearby as a compromise. She felt she had no choce, as the spring planting was the only way that the family would be able to provide for themselves that year.

Glidewell says the bishop confiscated their horse as punishment for their disobedience.

The family returned to the Lutheran faith they had practiced in Denmark before converting to the LDS Church and they joined a movement called the Liberal Party, Glidewell explains.

Prior to 1896, when the State of Utah instituted the public education system, children were schooled privately through religious programs. The Liberal Party provided an alternative education program outside the LDS Church, in addition to pursuing other political activities.

F.C. Jensen was mentored by Duncan McMillan, a Presbyterian minister who arrived in Mt. Pleasant in 1875 and who later founded the Wasatch Academy, originally a Presbyterian school.

Never pursued ministry

However, Jensen never pursued the ministry.

?F.C. loved McMillan, but he couldn?t follow in his footsteps by going to college because he couldn?t leave his mother,? Glidewell says.

Instead, Jensen married a local woman of Swedish descent named Edie Elizabeth Nielsen and pursued a number of local trades. In addition to running a state-of-the-art furniture store, he was a sheep herder and ran a successful freighting business throughout Utah.

?He was honest in his dealings and had a good reputation,? Colwill says of her grandfather. And he built businesses through trial and error.

Colwill describes a heartbreaking business delivery that illustrates the odds Jensen was up against.

Jensen won a contract to transport a heavy air compressor for a mine from Omaha to Salt Lake City. The machinery required a special wagon and yoke. Jensen had purchased a large team of extra fine blue Texas steers to carry the load, but four of the seven oxen in his team died along the trail, and Jensen had to trade the remainder for a team of horses. He was able to complete the trip to Salt Lake, but he and his brother were robbed in Salt Creek Canyon and came home penniless.

?He had determination,? Colwill says. ?It was a matter of survival. I guess there was a bishop?s storehouse, but they weren?t part of that church.?

Later in his life, when his determination paid off, Jensen would hold titles such as vice president of the Utah Banker?s Association, president of the school board, and member of the Board of Directors of the Sugar and Livestock Association.

Jensen was a prominent member of the Presbyterian Church. Colwill has also been a member of the Presbyterian faith her whole life, but one of her best friends at Wasatch Academy was LDS, and she has remained friendly to the LDS Church.

Colwill moved back east with her husband as an adult, but they have maintained a cabin in Fairview Canyon that they visit each summer. ?We love to go to the mountains. We like to camp in the national forest near there,? she says.

Although F.C. Jensen never went to college, he played an important role in providing a quality education for his children and grandchildren. Colwill was a member of the first graduating class as Wasatch Academy.

?My parents wanted me to be educated,? she says.

Colwill studied education in college and chose to become an elementary school teacher.

Jensen died in 1928. ?I never knew him,? Colwill says. But she says his hard work and sacrifices provided her and her family with a good life, for which she is grateful.

I just got out of a meeting at SRI International, where representatives from both SRI and international banking group BBVA showed off something they've been working on for the past couple of years. Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. 5 Ways to Increase Your Productivity | Business 2 Community

People often cite prioritization as a personal area of improvement. This is interesting, because we prioritize every day, every hour and every minute of our lives, so you think we would be good at it by now! At work, we not only have to prioritize OUR goals but we need to keep in mind those of our clients, coworkers and managers. In this post, I want to share with you some of the tricks I use to keep my priorities straight, and to more efficiently get work done.

First, and this is the hardest one, you need to accept that everything is NOT going to get done, at least not when you would ideally like it to. However, if you consider the following tips you will be better suited to meet your goals and the expectations of others.

• Understand the goal ? It is important to realize that your goals may differ from your clients, coworkers and managers. From the outset of a project, make sure to clearly define your goal(s) for all parties, so there is no confusion down the line.
• Create a plan and stick to it ? Following a plan will allow you to be in control of meeting your goals. If you have to work extra hours or meet with a busy coworker, factor that into your plan.
• Don?t multitask - This is a tough one for most of us but multi-tasking is perhaps the biggest detriment to productivity. Harvard Business Review released a study in 2010 that found multitasking can lead to as much as a 40% drop in productivity.
• Be Honest ? If you don?t think it can get done on time then it most likely will not. It is better to address delays as soon as they arise and in the long term, you will gain trust amongst your team.
• Be Realistic ? It is not that you don?t want to complete every task that gets thrown at you but sometimes, you just can?t. Take on only what you can handle; it is worse to commit to something and not get it done than it is to set real expectations that may not be to the liking of your client, coworker, etc.

Most importantly, these tips should help you to meet your goals and expectations without raising your stress level. By understanding the goals of your position and your company at large, you can create a plan that meets these goals. If you are honest, realistic and minimize multi-tasking, sticking to your plan will be reasonable and ultimately fulfilling.

South Africa police accused in murders

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Eighteen South African police officers have been arrested on charges of murder, assault and possession of ammunition, an official said.

A spokesman for prosecutors, Mthunzi Mhaga, said that during a court appearance on Friday in the eastern port city of Durban, the officers were freed on 5,000 rand (less than $600) bail each.

The arrests earlier this week followed an investigation that began in January 2012 after allegations of a police "death squad" operating in the Durban area appeared in the Sunday Times, a Johannesburg newspaper.

In 2011, the newspaper alleged that the unit had committed "scores of assassinations, some in retaliation for suspected cop killing and others related to ongoing taxi wars."

Using witness testimony, death scene photographs and expert ballistic reports, the newspaper linked the unit the police officers worked for to many suspicious deaths.

Police spokesman McIntosh Polela said police officers of various ranks were arrested, and that authorities seized counterfeit cash, ammunition and crime scene photos during the arrests.

The accused officers are to report weekly to their nearest police station. They are due back in court Aug. 23.

Polela says that more arrests are likely.

South Africa has a high rate of violent crime and some citizens, in calls to radio talk shows and letters to newspaper editors, have praised members of the alleged death squad for cracking down on criminals.

Apple map app puts it in the driver's seat

Maps have become the latest battleground in the war for mobile supremacy - and Apple clearly won the day.

The tech giant announced a built-in map app for iPhones and iPads at the Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday that includes free turn-by-turn directions, 3-D "flyover" views and real-time traffic alerts. When the next version of Apple's iOS becomes available, likely in the fall, the new app will supplant the one that Google powered on the iPhone for years.

The move gives Apple control over what's become a fundamental feature of smart phones, while undercutting its partner-turned-rival.

As Apple users upgrade their devices or software, Google will lose a portal to millions of people and the substantial local advertising opportunities that go with it. If Apple's new app works well, the company will also have neutralized one of the few reasons for consumers to consider Google's competing Android devices (other than price).

Android has included free turn-by-turn directions for years, wrapped into its intuitive and attractive navigation app. The feature is the one Android advantage I've highlighted when friends seek advice on their next phone, and it was the lone thing I missed when I switched back to an iPhone last year.

But if Apple has matched Google's functionality, they've taken turn-by-turn directions off the table.

Apple once partnered tightly with Google, putting the company's maps app on the default home screen of the first iPhones in 2007. But the Silicon Valley partnership frayed after the Mountain View search company released its own mobile software the following year. The late Steve Jobs, former chief executive of Apple, clearly considered Google's move a betrayal.

"I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product," he told his biographer, Walter Isaacson. "I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

Google now controls 50.8 percent of market share for smart phone software, compared with 31.4 percent for Apple, according to ComScore.

Over the years, Google has retained certain mapping enhancements strictly for its own mobile software, notably the turn-by-turn directions and 3-D city views. For its part, Apple has rejected several Google apps and introduced Siri, the voice-controlled personal assistant some see as a direct competitor to Google's mobile search.

In that light, Monday's announcement in San Francisco was just the latest in a series of steps that have minimized Google's presence on Apple's devices.

"It does not surprise me to see Apple purposely moving away from anything Google," said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies.

But it's not just about a business rivalry, of course. There are real strategic advantages to controlling mobile maps. They are one of the most heavily used features of smart phones. Yet until now, Apple, which is famously obsessed with controlling the user experience, has been forced to rely on a third party for that functionality.

"Google was substantially in control of this key piece," said Greg Sterling, senior analyst at Opus Research. "Apple needed maps, because it was very important to their users."

The Cupertino company was also relinquishing marketing revenue to Google, which includes sponsored links among map search results. Consumers frequently use mobile maps to look up nearby restaurants, stores, salons and more, queries that can be advertised against.

"Ninety-five percent of retail is offline," Sterling said. "There's a big stake in being found in these applications if you're a local business."

It's unclear how or whether Apple, which is far less dependent on ad revenue than Google, plans to include marketing in the app. The company did say Monday that it would feature local business information from Yelp, the San Francisco review site that highlights nearby deals in its mobile app.

Much of how this plays out in the marketplace will depend on how well Apple's new app works and how Google responds. The company tried to get ahead of Apple's news last week by announcing several forthcoming map improvements of its own, including offline viewing and similar 3-D flyover views.

So far we don't have much information to evaluate the offerings, beyond staged demos. But Bajarin said that Apple is clearly harnessing its product-design expertise, as well as the tight integration of its hardware and software, to deliver at least a visually superior app.

"Apple is playing to their strengths and in the end creating an incredibly rich experience for the user," he said.
