Dear QQ,
Figuring out the right ways to communicate with your coworkers is a full time job in itself. Everyone's different, as is every office, but let's take a look at how to handle a few of the most common mistakes that might be the root the problem.

Gauge Your Office Environment and Communicate Accordingly

All offices are different. That's partially because companies try and cultivate a specific environment. This means people tend to dress the same and communicate the same in an office. You'll learn these types of things over time, but effective conversation is also about the actual mode of communication.

Every office and every worker has their own communication preference. This might be email, face-to-face conversations, phone, instant messenger, or anything else. US News suggests that a common error amongst coworkers is not figuring out the right mode of communication with each coworker. So, respect the person you're trying to contact and get a hold of them the way they converse best.

If you're not sure exactly how you should be communicating, just ask. As 99U points out, you should find the right communication method and act accordingly:

Each individual has a natural communication style, but to work effectively within a team, you need to determine how much communication needs to happen to make everyone comfortable.... Or it could look like setting up a series of ?If, Then? communication triggers.

For example: ?If you will be out of the office for a week, then give me a status report a couple of days before you leave.? Or, ?If you encounter an issue that will lead to a delay, then notify me as soon as possible.? You can also ask for people to not communicate with you about certain things. For example: ?Please, don?t CC me on every e-mail between you and the printer.? Or, ?Please don?t tell me about issues if they?re problems you can fix yourself.?

Some people don't communicate enough, and others too much. Finding that balance isn't easy, but if you talk about it at the office you'll be better at communicating in the long term.

Watch Your Body Language

Body language plays a key role in communication. A major problem you can run into at work is miscommunication through body language.

The real trick for improving your body language at work is to pay attention to it more. We've pointed out before that you should minimize "moving away" behavior like sighing, averting eyes, and negative body language so you don't communicate something you don't intend. Instead, focus more on positive body language like long periods of eye contact, uncrossed limbs, and genuine smiles.

Body language is a tough one to improve on, but it's about being aware of the cues. It's also okay to just fake it until you're comfortable with it. Open body language can feel awkward when you're not used to it, but the more you try it the more comfortable you'll feel in the long run. Once you understand what you're conveying, it's easier to make sure you're conveying the right thing. Body language is only part of the picture, but it's a bigger part than you might think.

Be Direct

Oftentimes the biggest problem with communication in the workplace is miscommunication. This usually comes when someone isn't clear about goals, projects, or the work that needs to get done. Forbes suggests you keep conversations simple and direct in most circumstances:

Another strategy [Karen] Friedman draws from newscasting: Hit the headline first. Too many of us are just plain long-winded, she says. ?People don?t need to know everything we know,? she explains. ?Think about what the single most important point is that you need to make, the central idea. If your computer died or the fire alarm went off, what would be the one thing they needed to hear...?

Do ask open-ended questions. They can buy time, clarify where another person is coming from and prevent misinterpretation. For instance: ?I?m not sure I understand what you?re saying, so could you give me an example??

In general, our workplace communication should be quick and simple. Don't waste time with unnecessary conversation if you're not friends with someone. Get to the point and move along. When you're direct about any questions you have, everyone is on the same page and communicating more effectively.

In the end, it's really about paying attention to any cues you see in the office and trying to fit your communication style to that. It's not always easy, and it often takes time, but with a little effort you'll be there in no time.

Boss talk: A fantasy C-suite of powerful speakers - Fortune ...

FORTUNE ? Mary Civiello is president of Civiello Communications Group, a presentation and media coaching consulting firm that works with top executives. She's the author, with Arlene Matthews, of Communication Counts: Business Presentations for Busy People.

Civiello, who has advised some Fortune editors and writers on presentation skills, notes that today's leaders need to think and speak differently. Her tips? 1.) Your message is for the world, not just for the room. The proliferation of smartphones (with cameras) and video websites means speeches and interviews live on forever, and will be seen by broader audiences. 2.) Think about the show, not just your role.?If you have seen or heard something that is memorable, work it into your presentation. You don't want to appear like you were airlifted in for your part.??3) Get comfortable with bullets versus the polished script. What you lose in precise, well-crafted words you'll more than make up for in authenticity.

At Fortune's request, Civiello reviewed presentations and speeches of our Fortune Fantasy Sports Executive League roster and for a second year has fielded an expert team based on leaders' communications skills. She shared her methodology and her picks with editor Stephanie N. Mehta.

Mary Civeillo: To develop my roster, I considered what's changed in terms of best practices, along with what has always been important; the visual, vocal and verbal aspects of public speaking. I chose only executives who can be found online, on YouTube, CNBC, CNN, Bloomberg etc.-- places where leaders of public companies should be. I also tried to avoid commenting on those I'd selected last year to keep it fresh!

Carlos Brito of Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) is my CEO pick: He is a Brazilian heading up a beer business from the American heartland but his message and style speak to audiences around the world. He talks not just about a business having a vision but gets to the WIIFM--what's in it for me--the importance of people/employees sharing that vision. It's a great message to live on in our YouTube world. Brito moves strategically, to add impact to what he says. His gestures illustrate what he's saying versus the rehearsed chopping, and he gets out from behind that podium and walks, not aimlessly like too many, but strategically for impact, either between points, or to open and close. (Ginni Rometti of IBM and Indra Nooyi of Pepsico have both received kudos from me in the past)

Rosalind Brewer of Sam's Club (A unit of WMT) is my COO pick: She exemplifies what I mean when I say leaders have to think about the show, and share what the audience is seeing and feeling. When she got up to accept an award from the YWCA this year, Rosalind first talked from the heart about the accomplishments of the 3 young girls who'd been honored before she got up to speak. No one scripted it for her. Too many leaders miss opportunities to show they are human too.

(Steve Burke of NBC Universal is a close second to Rosalind. He too thinks about the show/the audience. ?More than a few executives who do on stage interviews talk only to the interviewer. In an All Things Digital interview you will see Steve listening to the question but then answering to the audience. I tell clients to devote 1/4 of your eye contact to the interviewer and the rest to the audience - all parts of the audience.)

Kevin Plank of Under Armour (UA) is my pick for Entrepreneur in Residence. He is a former athlete who has the coach's gift of getting people fired up. But motivating the team is part of every leader's job and to truly inspire, you can't do it from a script where the audience doesn't know if they are your words or thoughts. Kevin speaks from bullets, elaborating on each in a conversational way. It's not always perfect but it is authentic.

Antonio Lucio (V) is my pick for CMO. A top Pepsi exec before becoming VISA's CMO, Antonio demonstrates his enthusiasm. He moves, gestures naturally and importantly he talks with--not to--the audience. In a presentation to the Columbia Business school he asks questions real and rhetorical to keep the audience engaged and he looks at the next ppt slide briefly then turns to explain the top take away versus the usual verbatim read along that the WSJ dubbed "corporate karaoke!"

Safra Catz of Oracle (ORCL) is my choice for CFO. CFO's are often challenged with speaking like a real person about and to real people because their lives revolve around numbers. Safra is an exception. She is conversational, relatively jargon free and enthusiastic about how their products help people.

Todd Pierce of SalesForce.com (CRM) is my top pick for CIO. Todd is an animated speaker. When seated he leans forward when he gets to a big point the way we do when we are fired up, and he is great at breaking complex information into the magical 3s: Three points provide a verbal agenda, making it easy for everyone to follow and remember.

Yves Behar is my Designer/Engineer selection. Speaking in a TED talk, Yves uses stories about his childhood to add context and clarity to his design approach. Stories from childhood also are fertile ground for humor even when you aren't a natural comedian. Clients ask me about the wisdom of telling jokes. I always say tell a story, that's better and safer.

Gideon Yu, President San Francisco 49ers is my pick for utility player. Gideon speaks with focus and energy that makes you believe that he can do anything or will give it his all. That kind of enthusiasm is infectious. I always tell clients that if you aren't enthusiastic, no one will be. Gideon conveys it not with rapid-fire talk but with his posture, gestures and eyes. Studies show that the visual aspects of style are what adds most credibility to your speaking -- they show you believe what you are saying.

Finally, I pick A.G. Lafley for non-executive chairman. It's no wonder P&G (PG) brought him back. He has gravitas, and projects confidence without airs or using fancy words. In an interview on stage talking to the McCombs School of Business, he was opinionated on everything from diversity to executive compensation. He emphasized important words--no monotone and he broke up his thoughts with the powerful pause that allows us to digest and remember his thoughts.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Keith Urban is coming back to "American Idol."

Fox chairman Kevin Reilly on Thursday confirmed the return of the country music star, settling the fate of the only judge left from last season on the talent competition.

"He did a really good job last year," Reilly said to a gathering of the Television Critics Association. "The fans really like him."

Reilly said Urban didn't have a chance to show his personality. The executive didn't say why, but the country singer was routinely overshadowed by bickering between fellow judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. Their departures, along with that of Randy Jackson, were announced weeks ago, a response to the show's sagging ratings.

But Reilly was mum on who would sit beside Urban at the judges' table next season, which begins in January. Reilly said there have been discussions with Jennifer Lopez, a former judge, "but there is no deal with her or with anyone else."

"Idol" is looking for judges who make it comfortable for viewers, Reilly said. Whoever is on the panel, there will be a renewed emphasis on the contestants.

"The show always has been about the contestants," he said.

US STOCKS-S&P 500 ends flat; Fed gives no word on tapering

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 finished a volatile session nearly flat on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve gave no hint that a reduction in the pace of its bond-buying program is imminent.

After paring most of the day's gains just before the close, the S&P 500 ended July up 5 percent - its best monthly percentage increase since January.

In a statement following its two-day policy meeting, the Fed said the economy continues to recover but still needs support.

Stocks mostly extended gains following the Fed's statement, led by S&P indexes tracking consumer discretionary, energy and other growth sectors. The S&P consumer discretionary index ended up 0.5 percent.

At the same time, dividend-paying stocks such as utilities slipped. The S&P utility index slid 0.7 percent.

"The Fed continues to try to talk down the concerns of kind of a premature taper. In fact, there were even tones in this piece that were a little disinflationary," said Burt White, chief investment officer of LPL Financial (NasdaqGS: LPLA - news) in Boston.

The Fed's stimulus has been credited by many as central to the S&P 500's gain of 18.2 percent so far this year. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke jolted markets in late May by saying the central bank planned to ease back on its stimulus efforts once the economy improves.

Late in the session, shares of J.C. Penney sank 10.2 percent to $14.60 after commercial lender CIT Group (NYSE: CIT - news) stopped supporting deliveries from smaller manufacturers to the retailer, according to a New York Post report. The stock was the S&P 500's biggest percentage loser.

The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 21.05 points, or 0.14 percent, to end at 15,499.54. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index dipped 0.23 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to finish at 1,685.73.

In contrast, the Nasdaq Composite Index rose 9.90 points, or 0.27 percent, to close at 3,626.37.

The Dow set an all-time intraday high of 15,634.32 early in the session, while the Nasdaq reached a session high of 3,649.35, its highest since late 2000.

All three major U.S. stock indexes posted healthy gains for the month of July. The Dow rose 4 percent, the S&P 500 climbed 5 percent and the Nasdaq gained 6.6 percent.

The S&P 500 rose to less than 2 points from hitting 1,700, considered a key level of resistance for the market. The index has struggled to break above the mark, and for 10 straight sessions, it has traded within 10 points of 1,700. A rise above that level could signal that stocks have more room to rise.

In Wednesday's session, the shares of credit card companies ranked among the biggest losers. Shares of Visa (NYSE: V - news) dropped 7.5 percent to $177.01 and had the biggest negative impact on the S&P 500. Shares of American Express, a Dow component, slid 1.9 percent to $73.77.

In another milestone set earlier in the session, Facebook Inc's stock traded above its initial public offering price of $38 for the first time since its market debut in May 2012. The stock rose as high as $38.31. Facebook closed at $36.80, down 2.2 percent.

Comcast Corp gave the S&P 500 its biggest boost after the U.S. cable provider posted a higher quarterly profit on Wednesday, as it added more Internet customers than expected on the cable side and booked an increase of more than 20 percent in operating cash flow at its NBC Universal unit. Comcast's Class A stock rose 5.6 percent to close at $45.08.

Glaxo case shines light on China's medical bribery

BEIJING (AP) ? Huang Dongliang says his uncle was being ignored by his low-paid cancer physician at a Chinese government hospital. So the family gave the doctor a "hongbao," the traditional red envelope used for gifts, with 3,000 yuan ($480).

"We could feel an obvious difference" after that, said Huang, who lives in the southeastern city of Quanzhou. "The doctor started to do more checkups, to give suggestions and advice and offered a detailed chemotherapy plan."

Such informal payments are pervasive in China's dysfunctional health system. Low salaries and skimpy budgets drive doctors, nurses and administrators to make ends meet by accepting money from patients, drug suppliers and others. Accusations this month that GlaxoSmithKline employees bribed Chinese doctors to prescribe its drugs brought international attention to the flow of illicit money. But to China's public, the practice has long been common knowledge.

Many blame a system in which the country's hospitals nearly all are state-run but get too little money from Beijing. Most of China's 2.3 million doctors are hospital employees and are barred from adding to their income by taking on second jobs.

"Physicians are way underpaid and they need to find a way to survive," said Gordon Liu, a health care economist at Peking University's Guanghua School of Management.

The ruling Communist Party has promised higher health spending as part of efforts to spread more of China's prosperity to its poor majority. But with a population of 1.3 billion, the cost of a full-scale overhaul will be daunting for Beijing. The government faces other financial demands while economic growth is slowing.

Under the current system, the state-set price to see an oncologist or other specialist is as little as 8 yuan ($1.25) ? less than the cost of a hamburger and too little to cover a hospital's expenses.

An experienced physician might earn 6,000 yuan ($980) a month. That top level is about average for an urban Chinese worker at a time when a 100-square-meter (1,000-square-foot) apartment in Beijing can cost more than 6 million yuan ($1 million).

To fill the gap, hospitals add surcharges to drug prices and assign employees sales quotas. Doctors and other employees accept money to move patients up waiting lists for surgery or to let them see the physician they prefer. Doctors, administrators and others take kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies to use more expensive drugs or use them more often. Bribes can also distort treatment by encouraging overuse of expensive drugs or procedures.

"There are many farmers and people without medical insurance, and it's they who suffer greatly," said Liu Junhai, head of the Commercial Law Research Institute of the ruling party's Renmin University.

Huang said that after his uncle was diagnosed with lung cancer last October, he went to the bigger nearby city of Xiamen, which had a reputation for "better medical ability and attitude."

"The doctor barely said anything useful after 12 or 13 days in the hospital," he said. "Then my cousin sent 3,000 yuan to get the doctor to pay more attention to my uncle."

Complaints about medical corruption have fueled public frustration at doctors, nurses and hospitals. Distraught families that pay extra are dismayed if a patient sickens or dies. That has erupted in a spate of stabbings and other violence against hospital employees.

Last year, 39 staff members of a hospital in the southern city of Gaozhou and five salespeople for drug companies were implicated in a kickback scheme that inflated medicine costs for patients, according to the newspaper Shanghai Evening Post.

The hospital director was fired and 382 employees returned 5.8 million yuan ($950,000) in improper payments, the report said.

"For the hospital's 35 drug suppliers, no matter which is selected, in order to give the hospital an incentive to sell more drugs, they will all find ways to make contact with doctors," the hospital director, Ye Guanrui, was quoted as saying. "In a hospital with 1,000 staff members, one-third will take kickbacks."

A half-dozen physicians and hospital employees approached by The Associated Press declined to talk about medical bribery, even on condition of anonymity, due to its sensitivity.

In the GlaxoSmithKline PLC case, police say employees of the British company paid doctors, hospital administrators and officials of the government and medical groups to encourage use of its medications.

Four employees have been detained. Police say they are suspected of laundering money through travel agencies to conceal the payments and evade Glaxo's internal anti-bribery controls.

Glaxo has tried to distance itself from the scandal, saying the employees acted without its knowledge and violated its policy.

Also last month, a rival drug manufacturer, AstraZeneca PLC, said police visited its office in what the company believed was an investigation of one of its sales representatives.

Last year, New York City-based Pfizer Inc. agreed to pay the U.S. government $60 million to settle charges its salespeople made improper payments to health care workers in China and other countries.

Estimates of how much outside money doctors and others receive range from 30 percent to up to 10 times their salaries, according to Peking University's Liu. He said he and colleagues have tried to gather data but hospital employees refuse to cooperate.

Despite the scrutiny directed at foreign drug suppliers, their Chinese rivals probably are more active at spreading around such payments, said Liu.

"In general, people would say domestic companies actually practice this informal payment approach almost as a common marketing strategy," he said. "For multinationals, this is not a common marketing tool."

The financial strain of health care on families is so great that it is distorting China's economy.

Until recently, few had health insurance and families saved a big share of their income to pay for medical emergencies. That left less for consumer spending, hampering the Communist Party's efforts to nurture self-sustaining economic growth based on domestic consumption instead of exports and investment.

The latest scandal could increase pressure on Chinese leaders to speed up promised health reforms.

The ruling party is promising more health care spending as part of an expansion of social welfare aimed at spreading China's new prosperity to its poor majority. The government says state-provided health insurance has been expanded to cover 95 percent of people in China, up from less than 50 percent in 2006.

Following the accusations against GlaxoSmithKline employees, the chairman of a government health panel acknowledged the link between low spending and graft.

Beijing has imposed price caps on several hundred drugs deemed essential. But that gave hospitals that add a surcharge to medicine prices an incentive to use more of them. The Cabinet's planning agency launched an investigation in July of production costs at 60 Chinese and foreign suppliers in a possible prelude to issuing new price standards.

The government has promised to ban surcharges by hospitals to reduce incentives to overuse drugs.

Beijing also has promised to pay doctors more, but Peking University's Liu said bringing them into line with comparable professions could require doubling or tripling salaries.

Instead, some reformers are urging Beijing to adopt a U.S.- or European-style system in which doctors can work second jobs and open private clinics.

ARLINGTON, Texas ? It was an extremely eventful Tuesday evening for the Angels, who pounded out 16 hits but lost their fifth consecutive game, blowing a four-run, eighth-inning lead in a 14-11, 10-inning loss to the Texas Rangers at the Ballpark in Arlington.

Manager Mike Scioscia was ejected in the second inning and Howie Kendrick became the ninth player in franchise history to amass 1,000 hits with a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning.

Mike Trout had four hits and two walks and has reached base in 10 consecutive plate appearances, two shy of Bobby Grich's club record of 12, set in 1984, and Josh Hamilton drove in four runs.

C.J. Wilson had his worst start (four innings, six runs, 11 hits) of the year, and the bullpen suffered another meltdown, Dane De La Rosa giving up a three-run home run to Geovany Soto in the eighth inning and struggling closer Ernesto Frieri blowing a save in the ninth for the second consecutive game.

Texas then won it in the 10th inning on Leonys Martin's three-run walk-off home run against Daniel Stange, who walked the first two batters of the inning.

Callaspo, a switch-hitter who is batting .252 with five home runs and 36 runs batted in and is a solid defender, was pulled in the fifth inning and missed by the ninth inning.

After Frieri walked Ian Kinsler on four pitches with two outs and Kinsler stole second, Adrian Beltre hit a hard grounder that went under the glove of Tommy Field, who replaced Callaspo at third base.

Kinsler scored to tie the score, 11-11, and the play was ruled a hit that gave Frieri, who has retired only six of the 20 batters he has faced in his last four games, his fourth blown save.

?It's so frustrating the way things are going lately,? Frieri said. ?Everything's been going wrong. Not just for me, for everybody. This is the most frustrating moment of my career.?

Not for Callaspo, who gained 14 games in the standings with Tuesday night's trade. Callaspo, 30, is expected to share a second-base platoon with Eric Sogard in Oakland, though he hasn't played second regularly since 2009 with Kansas City.

?We need some help from the right side swinging,? Oakland General Manager Billy Beane told A's reporters. ?It's become noticeable in the last month or so.?

Green, 25, will report to triple-A Salt Lake. The former Anaheim Canyon High and USC star, a first-round pick (13th overall) in 2009, was hitless in 15 at-bats in a recent big league stint.

Green hit .325 with 11 home runs and 50 RBIs in 87 games for triple-A Sacramento this season but has struggled to find a position. He was drafted as a shortstop but played the outfield, third base, first base and second base in the minor leagues.

?He'll get some time at second, third and shortstop, and we'll see where it goes,? said Matt Klentak, Angels assistant general manager. ?We believe his bat profiles to being a big league regular, for sure. He's hit at every level he's played at.?

The Angels pulled triple-A infielder Chris Nelson from Salt Lake?s game against Iowa on Tuesday. He is expected to take Callaspo?s place on the Angels roster.
