Video: Wireless power could revolutionize highway transportation

A Stanford University research team has designed a high-efficiency charging system that uses magnetic fields to wirelessly transmit large electric currents between metal coils placed several feet apart. The long-term goal of the research is to develop an all-electric highway that wirelessly charges cars and trucks as they cruise down the road.

The new technology has the potential to dramatically increase the driving range of electric vehicles and eventually transform highway travel, according to the researchers. Their results are published in the journal Applied Physics Letters (APL).

"Our vision is that you'll be able to drive onto any highway and charge your car," said Shanhui Fan, an associate professor of electrical engineering. "Large-scale deployment would involve revamping the entire highway system and could even have applications beyond transportation."

Driving range

A wireless charging system would address a major drawback of plug-in electric cars ? their limited driving range. The all-electric Nissan Leaf, for example, gets less than 100 miles on a single charge, and the battery takes several hours to fully recharge.

A charge-as-you-drive system would overcome these limitations. "What makes this concept exciting is that you could potentially drive for an unlimited amount of time without having to recharge," said APL study co-author Richard Sassoon, the managing director of the Stanford Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP), which funded the research. "You could actually have more energy stored in your battery at the end of your trip than you started with."

The wireless power transfer is based on a technology called magnetic resonance coupling. Two copper coils are tuned to resonate at the same natural frequency ? like two wine glasses that vibrate when a specific note is sung. The coils are placed a few feet apart. One coil is connected to an electric current, which generates a magnetic field that causes the second coil to resonate. This magnetic resonance results in the invisible transfer of electric energy through the air from the first coil to the receiving coil.

"Wireless power transfer will only occur if the two resonators are in tune," Fan noted. "Objects tuned at different frequencies will not be affected."

In 2007, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used magnetic resonance to light a 60-watt bulb. The experiment demonstrated that power could be transferred between two stationary coils about six feet apart, even when humans and other obstacles are placed in between.

"In the MIT experiment, the magnetic field appeared to have no impact on people who stood between the coils," Fan said. "That's very important in terms of safety. "

Wireless charging

The MIT researchers have created a spinoff company that's developing a stationary charging system capable of wirelessly transferring about 3 kilowatts of electric power to a vehicle parked in a garage or on the street.

Fan and his colleagues wondered if the MIT system could be modified to transfer 10 kilowatts of electric power over a distance of 6.5 feet ? enough to charge a car moving at highway speeds. The car battery would provide an additional boost for acceleration or uphill driving.

Here's how the system would work: A series of coils connected to an electric current would be embedded in the highway. Receiving coils attached to the bottom of the car would resonate as the vehicle speeds along, creating magnetic fields that continuously transfer electricity to charge the battery.

To determine the most efficient way to transmit 10 kilowatts of power to a real car, the Stanford team created computer models of systems with metal plates added to the basic coil design.

"Asphalt in the road would probably have little effect, but metallic elements in the body of the car can drastically disturb electromagnetic fields," Fan explained. "That's why we did the APL study ? to figure out the optimum transfer scheme if large metal objects are present."

Using mathematical simulations, postdoctoral scholars Xiaofang Yu and Sunil Sandhu found the answer: A coil bent at a 90-degree angle and attached to a metal plate can transfer 10 kilowatts of electrical energy to an identical coil 6.5 feet away.

"That's fast enough to maintain a constant speed," Fan said. "To actually charge the car battery would require arrays of coils embedded in the road. This wireless transfer scheme has an efficiency of 97 percent."

Wireless future

Fan and his colleagues recently filed a patent application for their wireless system. The next step is to test it in the laboratory and eventually try it out in real driving conditions. "You can very reliably use these computer simulations to predict how a real device would behave," Fan said.

The researchers also want to make sure that the system won't affect drivers, passengers or the dozens of microcomputers that control steering, navigation, air conditioning and other vehicle operations.

"We need to determine very early on that no harm is done to people, animals, the electronics of the car or to credit cards in your wallet," said Sven Beiker, executive director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford (CARS). Although a power transfer efficiency of 97 percent is extremely high, Beiker and his colleagues want to be sure that the remaining 3 percent is lost as heat and not as potentially harmful radiation.

Some transportation experts envision an automated highway system where driverless electric vehicles are wirelessly charged by solar power or other renewable energy sources. The goal would be to reduce accidents and dramatically improve the flow of traffic while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Beiker, who co-authored the APL study, said that wireless technology might one day assist GPS navigation of driverless cars. "GPS has a basic accuracy of 30-40 feet," he said. "It tells you where you are on the planet, but for safety, you want to make sure that your car is in the center of the lane." In the proposed system, the magnetic fields could also be used to control steering, he explained. Since the coils would be in the center of the lane, they could provide very precise positioning at no extra cost.

The researchers also have begun discussions with Michael Lepech, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, to study the optimal layout of roadbed transmitters and determine if rebar and other metals in the pavement will reduce efficiency.

"We have the opportunity to rethink how electric power is delivered to our cars, homes and work," Fan said. "We're used to thinking about power delivery in terms of wires and plugging things into the wall. Imagine that instead of wires and plugs, you could transfer power through a vacuum. Our work is a step in that direction."

Causes of Jealousy

  • ?Scarcity mindset. Have you ever felt as though someone else?s success and happiness takes away from your own? If you believe that the world is an abundant place, jealousy becomes far more difficult. This negative emotion can sometimes be merely a symptom of a scarcity mindset.
  • Consider that if someone you know is doing really well, you are also helped by their success. They?re more enjoyable to be around. The positive feelings that they have will naturally be spread to everyone around them. This is a good thing. Would you prefer to be surrounded by people who are struggling and unhappy?
  • Those who are doing extremely well can also serve as inspiration; they show us what is possible. Being surrounded by people who are excelling where you?re challenged may actually help to lift you to a new level of success.
  1. ?You vs. Them? mindset. Jealousy is very much based on the ego. To feel jealous, you must believe that reality is a ?you vs. them? situation. If someone else gets that fantastic new car, now you can?t have it. They won, so you must have lost. But there are essentially an unlimited number of great cars, houses, boyfriends, girlfriends, and jobs.
  • Jealousy begets more jealousy. Those who are routinely jealous seem to attract a lot of situations that cause even more emotional pain.
  • For example, if you lose that great promotion to someone else and are oozing jealousy, then you?re probably not going to seem very attractive to some great new girlfriend. Then you?re jealous about that, and so on.

Secrets of Success in Overcoming Your Jealousy

Jealousy can also serve as a guide. The things that fill you with the greatest sense of frustrated desire are likely the things that you want the most, but currently don?t have.

If you?re incredibly jealous of someone?s romantic relationship, your emotions are simply a wake-up call. They?re really telling you that a great relationship would be a meaningful addition to your life, so it would be good to focus on bringing a fulfilling relationship into your life.

Now that you?re paying attention to what your jealousy is really telling you, you have a good idea of where you should be focusing your energy.

When you use your jealousy in this fashion, you?re accomplishing several things:

1.????? Depersonalizing the issue. When you view your jealousy as simply feedback from your brain, you?re far less likely to go to an unproductive place in your mind. This emotion isn?t about your inability to have something you want. Instead, it?s just letting you know what you want.

2.????? Allowing jealousy to serve as guidance. Now you?re using your negative feelings to propel yourself forward in a positive direction.

3.????? Improving your life. As you focus on obtaining what you desire, you?re bound to improve your life. Once you take care of a couple of the bigger items, there won?t be much left to be jealous about anyway.

Recognize that jealousy is largely the result of a scarcity mindset. If you truly believe that there?s plenty to go around, you aren?t capable of being jealous. Work on that and you?ll see that someone else?s success doesn?t limit your own.

As you can see, jealousy can be used as tool to serve you and improve your life. Ask yourself why something makes you so envious and then seek to resolve it. Be savvy about your emotions, and jealousy can actually work for you instead of against you.

Janice Harper: I Hate Homework: A Mother's Confession

When it came time for my daughter to start Kindergarten, it suddenly hit me. I would have to get her to school each morning. On time. For 13 years. The thought had never occurred to me, and had it crossed my mind six years prior, she would probably not exist.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it after the first year," a friend assured me. A year? I couldn't imagine. But somehow, she was right; by the time first grade rolled around I was a pro at manipulating all that six-year-old energy into a focused direction -- clothes on, healthy breakfast efficiently consumed, hair unsnarled, combed and tied into a perky ponytail, shoes velcroed (thank God for that technological innovation), and my own frazzled flesh washed, painted, dressed and ready to go.

At first, the school years were adorable. The cute little drawings she'd bring home ("It's the Mona Lisa, with eyebrows"), the clever observations ("I think the principal needs to be expelled"), the major achievements ("We cut open dead people at school today to find out why they died"). But when she had her first year-end project due, I realized things were going to get rough. She was supposed to turn in a collection of a hundred objects, collected over the school year. We'd been meaning to get around to it for months, when one day, she came home with a notice that it was due the following morning. I had something to do that evening or some guy to see and left her with a babysitter, like they do on TV. I grabbed a big jar of shells she'd collected on the beach and told the sitter to count out a hundred and put them in a baggy. She did, and my daughter dutifully carried her baggy of shells to school.

The following week there was a big event for all the parents. I went, proud of my cute and clever little girl and all that she'd learned and done over the school year. But when we got there, I was horrified to see the halls lined with amazing displays -- the Battle of Gettysburg recreated with a hundred plastic soldiers; the food pyramid recreated with a hundred paper-m?ch? veggies and grains ; Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry recreated with a hundred hand-carved wizards. Each elaborate diorama was a testament to parental dedication -- and parental craftsmanship from the look of most of them. Then there was my daughter's -- a plastic bag of shells.

Turns out the assignment was not to just collect a hundred things, but to tell a story with them, construct a display that would portray their deeper meaning. How humiliated my daughter must have been, I realized, kicking myself for not paying more attention. I sent an email to her teacher that very night, apologizing for my neglect. "No problem at all," she assured me, "part of the assignment was to explain to the class why they chose what they collected. Most of the children didn't really know, but your daughter told a wonderful story about how the shells told the story of the history of the world."

I realized then and there that I was raising a con artist who could put Olivia the pony-tailed pig to shame, and that my parental neglect was teaching her to be fast on her feet, a skill that would take her far. And so it was that I relaxed and figured if she passed Kindergarten, she'd do alright.

Years passed and I got better at paying attention to her projects, though most of them tended to require last-minute trips to the crafts supply store, hot glue guns and squabbles that inevitably ended with threats to put each other up for adoption. I couldn't wait for the project years to end, because all the other parents seemed to do it better, and I was never quite sure what it was the kids were learning aside from how to manage us.

Eventually, there were fewer and fewer three-dimensional homework assignments to assist with, and what few there were she did on her own, rarely even telling me what it was that she was up to. "What in the world are you doing with that nuclear waste?" I would inquire, to which she would nonchalantly reply, "I'm just doing my science homework, can you hand me the uranium hexaflouride?" I'd shrug my shoulders, do as I was told and go back to griping on the phone about how tough it is to be a parent.

Then she hit high school, and things really got rough. Now the homework requires asking me intellectual questions, expecting me to explain all sorts of complicated things, quiz her on her accumulating knowledge and evaluate her brilliance. "But I don't know logarithms!" I protest, "You still need to help me with your times tables."

"Mom, I learned times tables in third grade," she scolds, "please can't you test me on this?"

"Call your Dad," I counter, "he's the one who gave you those quantitative genes; it's not my doing."

"Fine. Then you can help me with my social studies," she suggests, confident that my Ph.D. in the social sciences will see me through ninth grade exams, "I just want to go over the fall of the Roman Empire."

The fall of the Roman Empire? All they taught me in graduate school was the fall of the U.S. Empire. That's outside my specialty.

"But I don't do empires!" I plead.

She looks at me like she's descended from apes. Recently.

"That's okay," she sighs, clearly ashamed to be related. "I have social studies down pretty well. Can you at least help me with physics?"

I feel like a criminal, caught in a lie. How can I get out of this one? "But you don't really learn effectively by being quizzed," I suggest in my best professorial tone, "pedagogically, it's a poor method for retaining information because -- " But she cuts me off.

"Admit it; you just don't want to help me with my homework!"

"Okay," I concede, "I thought homework was over when I got my Ph.D., and now you're making me go all the way through high school again. That's too hard!" I wail at the injustice, wishing only that she'd go to her room and study so I could turn on the TV and watch a rerun of Revenge. But she won't budge. She hands me her study sheet and tells me to quiz her.

"Start with the Bohr principle," she instructs, and I find it aptly named, because this homework is really a bore.

Two hours later, we're done, and I'm confident I could score a low C on the test, and she's confident that if I ever decide to put my head in the oven, I won't have sense enough to make sure it's not electric, given my inability to know the difference between a gas and an electron.

"I'm much worse off than I was before we began," she points out in a teenager's tone as she heads off to study without me. "I would have learned more by studying with the cat!"

"It's not my fault," I protest, "I don't know the answers!"

"The answers are right here!" she wails at me, shaking the study guide like it was some binding contract, "All you had to do was make sure you were comparing my answers with the answers I had written down - but you kept losing your place and telling me I was wrong when I was right because you were looking at answers to questions about neutrons when I was answering questions about density and matter! Anyone can tell the difference!"

I hang my head in shame. I look up sheepishly, "I'm sorry," I plead. "I'll make you cookies . . ." She perks up, gives me a big hug and suggests that's a good idea. She knows I can do math in the kitchen, figure out chemical conversion as long as it involves an oven, and master physics when it comes to calculating how long I should beat the batter before density kicks in. Just don't ask me about the fall of the Roman Empire, unless it's the name of a souffl? (in which case I can tell you all about it). As Socrates said, it's not information that gives us knowledge, but experience.

And as Socrates also said, true knowledge is knowing you know nothing. I really don't know much about Socrates, but I can tell you one thing. He must have been a parent.

According to new study published in Pain

Philadelphia, PA, January 31, 2011 Back problems are a highly prevalent health issue, and people with the condition have a significantly greater chance of retiring early from the workforce, much more so than for any other health condition. A group of Australian researchers reports that not only does early retirement limit the immediate income available to these individuals, but it also reduces their long-term financial capacity, by reducing their ability to accumulate wealth to a significant degree. Their study is published in the January issue of Pain.

"Relative to those who retired early due to other health problems, there are more than twice as many people who have retired early due to back problems who are estimated to have no savings by the time they reach the traditional retirement age of 65," according to lead investigator Professor Deborah Schofield, PhD, Chair of Health Economics at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre and Sydney School of Public Health, University of Sydney, Australia. "For most of the age and sex groups analyzed, even those who reported back pain and were working full time accumulated less wealth than full-time workers who suffered no chronic health conditions."

Researchers based their study on "Health&WealthMOD," a microsimulation model designed to measure the economic impacts of ill health on Australian workers aged 45-64 years. The model uses data from the nationally representative 2003 Survey of Disability, Ageing and Careers (2003 SDAC). The authors estimated the value of retirement wealth that would be available to individuals at retirement age, and assumed that respondents converted their private retirement accounts, cash, shares, and investment properties into cash and invested it in an income stream, such as an annuity. This income stream, plus any government pension benefit, provided a basis for comparing different living standards in retirement.

The 2003 SDAC data included 147 individuals between 45-64 years who were out of the labor force due to back problems, 168 respondents who were employed part time and had back problems, and 356 who were employed full time and had back problems.

By age 65, almost all the individuals who were employed full time with no health condition will have accumulated some wealth, but only 75% to 85% of those who are out of the labor force due to their back condition will have done so. Men aged 45-54 years who retired early due to back problems are expected to have a median value of wealth, by the time they are 65, of only $5,038, which generates an annuity of only $291 per annum (all dollar values are in 2009 Australian dollars). This amount is far lower than the expected median value of wealth for men in the same age group who remained in the labor force full time, with $339,121 of wealth at retirement age, and an estimated annuity value of $19,592. Women aged 45-54 years who retired early due to back problems are expected to have a median wealth value at age 65 of only $20,064, whereas their counterparts who remained in the workforce full time will have $237,496 of wealth. The corresponding annuity values for these two groups were $1,015 and $12,014, respectively.

"Preventing early retirement due to back problems will increase the time individuals have to amass wealth assets to finance their retirement," says Professor Schofield. "Adopting cost-effective approaches to prevention and treatment of back problems may contribute to extending the labor force participation of individuals and help prevent the costs of lower wealth assets associated with early retirement due to back problems."

Pythons apparently wiping out Everglades mammals

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? A burgeoning population of huge pythons ? many of them pets that were turned loose by their owners when they got too big ? appears to be wiping out large numbers of raccoons, opossums, bobcats and other mammals in the Everglades, a study says.

The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that sightings of medium-size mammals are down dramatically ? as much as 99 percent, in some cases ? in areas where pythons and other large, non-native constrictor snakes are known to be lurking.

Scientists fear the pythons could disrupt the food chain and upset the Everglades' environmental balance in ways difficult to predict.

"The effects of declining mammal populations on the overall Everglades ecosystem, which extends well beyond the national park boundaries, are likely profound," said John Willson, a research scientist at Virginia Tech University and co-author of the study.

Tens of thousands of Burmese pythons, which are native to Southeast Asia, are believed to be living in the Everglades, where they thrive in the warm, humid climate. While many were apparently released by their owners, others may have escaped from pet shops during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and have been reproducing ever since.

Burmese pythons can grow to be 26 feet long and more than 200 pounds, and they have been known to swallow animals as large as alligators. They and other constrictor snakes kill their prey by coiling around it and suffocating it.

The National Park Service has counted 1,825 Burmese pythons that have been caught in and around Everglades National Park since 2000. Among the largest so far was a 156-pound, 16.4-foot one captured earlier this month.

For the study, researchers drove 39,000 miles along Everglades-area roads from 2003 through 2011, counting wildlife spotted along the way and comparing the results with surveys conducted on the same routes in 1996 and 1997.

The researchers found staggering declines in animal sightings: a drop of 99.3 percent among raccoons, 98.9 percent for opossums, 94.1 percent for white-tailed deer and 87.5 percent for bobcats. Along roads where python populations are believed to be smaller, declines were lower but still notable.

Rabbits and foxes, which were commonly spotted in 1996 and 1997, were not seen at all in the later counts. Researchers noted slight increases in coyotes, Florida panthers, rodents and other mammals, but discounted that finding because so few were spotted overall.

"The magnitude of these declines underscores the apparent incredible density of pythons in Everglades National Park," said Michael Dorcas, a professor at Davidson College in North Carolina and lead author of the study.

Although scientists cannot definitively say the pythons are killing off the mammals, the snakes are the prime suspect. The increase in pythons coincides with the mammals' decrease, and the decline appears to grow in magnitude with the size of the snakes' population in an area. A single disease appears unlikely to be the cause since several species were affected.

The report says the effect on the overall ecosystem is hard to predict. Declines among bobcats and foxes, which eat rabbits, could be linked to pythons' feasting on rabbits. On the flip side, declines among raccoons, which eat eggs, may help some turtles, crocodiles and birds.

Scientists point with concern to what happened in Guam, where the invasive brown tree snake has killed off birds, bats and lizards that pollinated trees and flowers and dispersed seeds. That has led to declines in native trees, fish-eating birds and certain plants.

In 2010, Florida banned private ownership of Burmese pythons. Earlier this month, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced a federal ban on the import of Burmese pythons and three other snakes.

Salazar said Monday that the study shows why such restrictions were needed.

"This study paints a stark picture of the real damage that Burmese pythons are causing to native wildlife and the Florida economy," he said.
