Wall Street opens lower on Europe worries

By Patrick Rizzo

Stocks edged?lower after the opening bell Wednesday on Wall Street as nervousness about the situation in Europe overcame any optimism caused by a better-than-expected report on hiring by the private sector.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down about 25 points in initial trading. The broader S&P 500 and Nasdaq markets were also down.

Before?Wall Street opened, stock futures had been pointing to a higher opening amid reports that European officials are exploring a coordinated response to propping up the region's struggling banks.

Sentiment was also helped before the opening bell?by?news that?payrolls processor ADP?reported?private employers added 91,000 jobs, higher than the 75,000 jobs that Reuters reported economists expected.

But investors were seeking more information on Europe's plans and backed off shares amid the uncertainty.

Trading has been volatile lately, with shares making big swings during the sessions. On Tuesday, shares staged a?rally in the last half hour of trading to end higher.
